  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
My salon a/c is blowing cold only from the rear air handler. The air handler on the bridge is working but not blowing cold .I do not see how this is possible as they work off the same compressor .This has started suddenly today-not a slow build up to this situation.Any ideas ian w

ian, unless your boat has been modified, the forward salon ac and the aft salon ac use different compressors. my forward one is out and i am in the process of fixing it

I have a 53 and thought the same as Ian, a single compressor for both air handlers in the salon. The other three smaller units were for each of the lower state rooms. All four compressors are located on the aft bulk head of the port engine room. I have a fifth unit for the aft deck and that compressor takes up a lot of space in the starboard engine room. My 53 is a 1984 model so maybe the vintage make the difference.
Regardless BigBill has gotten my curiousity up. Everything about this boat is new to me and so far it has been quite the educational experience.

Concur with Jim above - on my '80 53MY there is one compressor/two air handlers for the salon, same for galley/bow. Then the master and guest SRooms each have a compressor and single air handler for a total in the boat of 4 compressors and 6 air handlers. There probably are differences depending on the year.

My galley/bow handlers have always been noticeably different in cooling capability, with the galley AH putting out much cooler air than the bow handler. However, since they both cool adequately, I have never really looked into it. In your case this change in ability occurred rather suddenly, which clearly indicates something has changed.

Am I correct that the forward air handler is blowing the same VOLUME of air that it always has? If so, that would tend to eliminate a clogged filter (if it has one - probably not) or clogged evaporator. However, it would be good to check that just to be sure. The access to our forward salon AH is from the galley cabinet on the aft port side. There is an access panel in the back of the cabinet.

It may be that if a dual handler system is slightly low on refrigerant, it affects one air handler more than the other - the furthest one, I would think; but that's just a wag on my part. It also seems logical that if the AHs are connected in series (I don't know if they are or not), then it makes sense that one would always blow colder than the other and that if there was a recent loss of some refrigerant, it would affect the furthest one the most. BUT this is just speculation on my part.

I would check the evaporator for clogged filter/fins and if all looks OK, as much as it pains me, I would suggest you consult someone who regularly does work on such systems (dual air handler/single compressor).

I guess the set up has changed over the years as on the earlier boats the aft and fwd salon ACs are on different compressors, which is nice because if you loose one you still gets some cooling.

Master has its own too, guest and bow share a compressor. I added a 5th one just for the galley which is the best money I spent on the boat so far,,,

If the AH is up, could it be suddenly pulling warmer air from outside?

Yep, my 1970 is set up just like Pascal describes with two different compressors for the salon air handlers.

Mike P As usual your knowledge has helped-things I did not know after 23 years ownership of this boat .To the far right above the fridge freezer there are removable panels exposing the air handler. It is a very tight space to get into with coil cleaner however.I have cleaned as best I can-lots of dust-and it is definitely blowing cooler.

Fantastic. I changed my filters a couple of weeks ago and now I know hiow to get to the forward air handler's coil for cleaning.

Pull the grate off of where the cool comes in from the air handler to the grate. Check if the pleather air scoop has fallen or come apart- either directing cool air behind cabinets or otherwise. And for the record my 1980 53my has 5 compressors, with bow and galley sharing a compressor.

"And for the record my 1980 53my has 5 compressors, with bow and galley sharing a compressor."

Wow, not only are there differences between the years, there are differences between the same boat for the same year! There must have been a lot more day-to-day variation in construction than I would have imagined. Or maybe there were various options available for the AC which included having either multiple handlers or more compressors.
