  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
50' MOTOR YACHT (1964 - 1968)
I have the old 2 nut rudder stuffing box on my 1969 50MY.
I have a small leak and as the boat is coming out for bottom paint, it is time to fix this.
The problem I have is the threads have crud buildup on them.
I have not been able to back the locking nut off.
What will clean the threads???
I have used vinagar, no results.
Brass wire on the dremel seems to just smooth it out.
Thanks for any help.

Try brushing on some etching solution (phosfuric acid) do it a few times then hose it off and wire brush. Be carefull with the acid.

You need to keep one of theses on board anyway! A file is "harder" than the corrosion and therefor will "cut" it. ws

Also, try running the nut down farther before you clean the threads. Some old millwright tricks: PB blaster; heat; several "raps" on each flat with a hammer to shake the crud loose internally; slice the nut to relieve it and then re-braze it when its off. It will hold its dimension for this, as it is only a lock nut. It's a cast piece. Try to keep the pipe wrench off of it! That will squeeze it into being egg shaped. ws

Thanks yachtsmanbill, I bought a thread shaser kit from Sears. The file tool works on large bolts like the bottom of the stuffing box. The kit was less than $50.
