Hatteras Model
70' COCKPIT MY (1988 - 1997)
Can anyone tell me the size of the packing on the rudders of a 70 Hatt.? Going to be pulling it in a month or so to have the bottom done and want to add that to the list.
Also...the pilot house doors have some paint bubbling ....aluminum...painter says it will just come back if repainted. Does anyone have suggestions on proper striping and repainting....powder coat prior too...???
Thanks

Bubbles on painted services indicates contamination on the surface prior to painting. It could also be a lack of prep, sanding, de-glossing or leaving something on the surface and painting over it. Sometimes it takes time for the bubbles to appear. Scrape or sand them smooth, wipe the surface with a hot thinner, let dry and re- coat.

Aluminum is a bitch to prep. It's probably best to find a shop that can prep and powder coat. If not you'll be repainting every few years.

Seems like a good time to ask if anyone has used Alwgrip Max Cor. Their non-zinc chromate (2 part epoxy) aluminum primer.

I have been going back (re-paint) and forth (powder coat) on my aluminum frames and door for ages. Not looking forward to the prep work regardless of how I finish them...

Prep is 95% of the job, take on our time and do that portion correct. The coating will not work if the prep is taken lightly. Best of luck.

Take your time. Sorry

Do you really want to re-pack? Going to dripless rudder bearings is a really good solution. I am not a fan of packing as you can tell

I'd take new graphite packing any day. Some swear by the gore. I think it can perform as well or better than dripless with much easier maintenance when it needs fixing.

I replaced the packing on the main shafts with Graphite a couple of years ago and it has performed much like dripless seals! Great stuff! You just have to be careful not to tighten it too much on the shafts.

Ten years ago when I had a friend build new aluminum brackets as part of the dink cradle, he painted them with Evinrude white spray paint. They are still OK. Might be something to try. He did not prime first.

I agree completely Krush.

My boat already has dripless seals installed when it was upgraded to larger shafts for the repower. Obviously, in the short term I'm going to keep using them. But I still kind of wish it was simple old original logs. No worries about running single engine, can repack in the water. Spare parts are simple, no worries about single engine running, etc. Mechanical seals are amazing things, but they are also very sensitive....
