Hatteras Model
46' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1974 - 1981)
I'm looking for the correct rudder angle, shoe in or out and technique to achieve measurements. I have a 46 c series 1. Any help would be appreciated

straight from Hatteras 1/2" in for our girl

Call Hatteras and they will tell you per your boat as they are different.

That's right - per Hatteras the angle for a 53MY is from 1/2 to 1 inch toe in OR toe out - either one. So check to be sure.

Toe in or out is dependent on the size of the rudder and the position of the rudder in relation to the prop and shaft. Ask Hatteras because each model can or is different.

Do any of ya'll know the technical reason as to the "shoe-in/out"? Is it just like toe-in/out on a car? Just being curious :)

One of the most important reasons is that toe in/out keeps a steady (inward or outward) pressure on the rudders and linkages. If they were set straight ahead, they would flutter which increases wear on all the related components.

Basically it is the same as a car. But there are a lot of different factors that figure in. Like prop wash, size of the rudders, length and width, size of keel, whether the shaft is in-line with the rudder or offset, operation of the hull slow or fast. With no toe you would have a tendency to wonder or over steer and Like Mike said produce excess ware from flutter.

Would an incorrect rudder angle cause the boat to have a slight lean at higher than hull speeds?

No because they would balance out. Lean is caused by weight or improper trim tab placement.
