LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Roy Scheider, the actor best known for his role as a police chief in the blockbuster movie "Jaws," has died. He was 75.

Scheider died Sunday at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock, hospital spokesman David Robinson said. The hospital did not release his cause of death.

However, hospital spokeswoman Leslie Taylor said Scheider had been treated for multiple myeloma at the hospital's Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy for the past two years.

Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss starred in the 1975 movie, "Jaws," which was widely hailed as the film that launched the era of the Hollywood blockbuster. It was the first film to earn $100 million at the box office.

In 2005, one of Scheider's most famous lines in the movie — "You're gonna need a bigger boat" — was voted No. 35 on the American Film Institute's list of best quotes from U.S. movies.

That year, some 30 years after "Jaws" premiered, hundreds of movie buffs flocked to Martha's Vineyard, off the southeastern coast of Massachusetts, to celebrate the great white shark that terrified millions of moviegoers.

The island's JawsFest '05 also brought back some of the cast and crew, including screenwriter Carl Gottlieb and Peter Benchley, who wrote the novel that inspired Steven Spielberg's enduring classic.

Spielberg, Scheider, who played a police chief, and Dreyfuss, who played an oceanographer, were absent from Jawsfest '05. Co-star Robert Shaw, who played Quint, died in 1978.

Re: Roy Scheider of "JAWS" Dies

Passages I agree, my favorite movie as well. I enjoy being on the hook or a ball and watching the movie at night time. It's so much better than watching it at home! I was down in Martha's Vinyard last summer trying to find Quint's shack. Ran into an old timer who was highly involved with helping make the movie. It was very interesting talking to him. By the way Quint's shack was taken down after the movie, the town required it. Talk to you later Chris.

I just re-watched JAWS last night in honor of Roy. I forgot which TV show it was attached to, but there was a production company named "Bad Hat Harry Productions" and they always closed the show with a little cartoon clip of one guy saying to another "That's some bad hat Harry." Now I finally know where that came from! I can't believe I missed that for all these years. Further proof that there's always something new.

We try to vist Menemsha every summer. Many scenes from the movie were shot there. Arrow points to where Quints shack stood. It's now a vacant lot between the general store and ice cream stand.

Going through my old pics I found one of the remains to ORCA II. Orca II was the boat that was sunk over & over to film the final scenes. It was fitted with air bladders so they could quickly refloat it and take another shoot.

The orginal ORCA was shipped to Universal studios in LA where it floated in the lagoon at the JAWS ride. Last I heard, ORCA sunk in the lagoon where it remains today.

ORCA II, was abandoned on the west shore of Menempsha pond along with filming platforms and other production equipment.

This picture of my son, Dodger & I was taken 2006 at ORCA II's final resting place.
