What are the available routes between the east coast and the great lakes. Also, what are the height restrictions along the routes. Is there a preferred route or routes to avoid. Thinking it would be nice to venture into the great lakes once the ice is off and before it gets too cold next year.

You might get some help from the AGLCA.

Thanks Bob. Looking them up know...

Also look up captainjohn.org, a wealth of information about the loop...

We went up the Hudson from NY and then Erie canal to Oswego Canal to Lake Ontario, then cruised a little of the St. Lawrence Seaway for fun past the 10,000 islands district, back to Ontario and took the Trent Severn waterway in Canada to Lake Huron then to Lake Michigan and Chicago.

We had min height of 19 ft. with the arch down and it needed to be down for the Erie Canal. Also, the Erie is too low clearance after the Oswego Canal to go all the way to Lake Erie unless you have a much smaller boat. We have gone from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie via the Welland Canal and Lake Erie up past Detroit/Windsor to Lake Huron also, which is faster but not nearly as much fun as the beautiful Trent Severn Waterway and the spectacular North Channel at the top of Lake Huron, which is not to be missed. Here is a blog of that trip. Read a page and then click "newer post" at the bottom for the next page to go chronologically.

Have Fun!

Doug
