  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
67' COCKPIT MY (1987 - 1995)
I have read on other threads that Simrad and others make Auto Pilots that are compatible with my existing Roberston hydraulic pump.

I received this email from a reputable tech and need it vetted by the reputable Hatteras owners assembled here:

.
"Your existing drive pump is a “constant running” motor and pump set with separate remote “bang, bang” solenoid left & right fluid controls attached. Short of going to a more expensive commercial application pilot, none of our recreational pilot manufacturers can handle or control that older system at this point. Creating a hybrid work-around system with additional power relays and breakers just to maintain the older pump drive would not make sense, particularly based on the 1985 date of original manufacture stamped on your unit. Additionally, that older solenoid controlled system is not a proportionally controlled system, such as has been used by manufacturers after the early 1990’s to accomplish noticeably smoother and more true steering responses in “off-the-wind” or following sea conditions.

Having mentioned the above, can you please answer two more questions:
* Does your boat have an engine-driven power steering system onboard?
* Can you please take a picture of and tell us exactly what hydraulic ram model # is attached to the rudder steering arm?
If the hydraulic ram model information is not available, the ram diameter, length, piston width and full throw in inches will need to be determined."

Does this check out?

Does anyone know the answer to his questions?

Main question:

What autopilot system should I replace my Robertson with?

Thanks for your help.

Was that a factory guy? He is wrong.

My constant running pump works great with Simrad controller boxes.

Near 20 years ago, we purchased our Bertram 58 x 18 MY. It had the original Robertson AP with constant running pump.
That AP worked for about a year till we took a lightning strike.
The easiest way to fix it was replace it with a RobNet based AP26. Keeping the original steering pump.

I installed that nice Simrad AP26 / AC40 my self realizing that if I had to, I could put in a more modern pump later.
Upgraded 3 years ago to the AP48 / AC12. Still using that old constant running pump.

The next model controllers NAC2,3 does have provisions for a solenoid drive also.

These controllers also work 12 and 24 Volt systems.

He is asking about the power steering and ram size to match up a pump to fluid volume required to push the rudder in a timely fashion.

The "non proportionally controlled steering" He is correct there. A newer variable speed pump does offer this.
In all these years with our Simrad AP driving the boat, I have never missed this feature.

In all these years, I have never touched that pump either. The most bomb proof item on board.

Find another tech that wants to work with you, Not just sell stuff.

I can confirm what was mentioned above about the Simrad NAC-3. I installed mine using my existing pump, and although mine is not a constant running, solenoid type, I can confirm the NAC-3 will work with both and this is selected during the setup process.

Good Luck,

Main question:
What autopilot system should I replace my Robertson with?

Sorry I didn't get to this question.
The answer is;
It depends..

What MFDs are you using or will be using?
So many features between displays and APs are propitiatory of the MFD/AP mfg.
For example, no control head is required for a Simrad AP if your using a Simrad display, I'm sure the same with Raymarine and Garmin.

However, the AP with control head will follow routes and waypoint cross track errors. when following NEMA 183 or N2K from any mfg's device.

I have a Ray E120s and PC with RayNav software. I can set routs from either and the Simrad AP will follow the E120s route data on N2K (SeaTalk ng). The fancy Ray AP software and Icons are not usable. Lots of extra features are not usable between the different mfg products.

Next thought, The old AC40 used NEMA 183 to receive E120 data. Worked well.
My newer AC12 uses SimNet which is N2K based but again, the mfg's fancy signals are only good with same mfg products.
Does your current displays push N2K? NEMA 183 is not on the newer AC & NAC modules. I would hate to recommend a 183 to N2K converter, more complication and errors are possible.

I have a NSS12 in my shop collecting dust. When I stop adding new items to the top of my boats repair list, That will be installed.
I am a Simrad fan, Just 10 years ago, E120s were cheap.
Nothing beats a Simrad AP.

My partner sells all these brands. For simplicity, warranty and better factory support, he tries to sell all one mfg family of products. His thoughts are strong and solid.
Wish my check book was strong and solid.
