  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1978 - 1983)
All,

I am thinking about replacing my onboard battery charger that I believe is the original. This is the first boat that I have owned with diesels/8D batteries. I have (4) 8D batteries that I believe are wired together in two banks to make 24 volts a side. Is this a typical set up for a 43 convertible with twin Detroits?

I hadn't ran the engines for about 3 weeks and the port engine was a little sluggish to start after sitting that time (connected to shore power with the on board charger running). After it started and we got to our destination, both engines started just fine the next day. I am thinking the alternator was able to bring the batteries back up to their full charge. This leads me to believe the on board battery charger is on its last leg.

Being new to boats with diesels and 8D batteries, can you tell me if my 43c would have 2 batteries wired together to make 24v?

Also, which onboard battery charger would you all suggest I purchase to replace the existing one?

Thanks for all of your help!

The voltage is going to depend on whether the batteries are connected in parallel (positive to positive, negative to negative, = 12 volts ) or in series (positive to negative = 24 volts ).

Send pictures of the battery wiring.

I can tell from the cables and help point you in the right direction

Thanks for the information and for clarifying the difference between the two setups. Thoughts on which brand of battery charger to go with? I installed a NOCO in my previous boat.

Check the water level in your batteries and if low, bring the level up with distilled water. It may also say on them when they were put in service. It's more likely a battery problem than a battery charger problem.

I have a Phase 3 that I have been happy with, but if you are 24v, you will have plenty more options.

If its original it owes you nothing. I'd get a new charger because technology has advanced in 40 years.

If your 12 volt I suggest the victron ip44 12/60 (3)

If your 24 volt I suggest the victron ip44 24/30 (3).

I sell a lot of these. I also package them with breakers and cable when necessary.

Just installed a 24 volt.
