  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
My 1972 53MY is missing the starboard recessed trim tab. The only things missing are the trim tab and the piano hinge both of which I have from Sams. I went under the boat with mask and thought I felt stubs of screws that fixed the hinge to the boat but then I felt the port side which feel like studs and not screws. ( in Galveston bay things are done by feel and not vision).

So, when I pull the boat to replace the tab and hinge, I’m assuming screws will be inadequate. What is the anatomy involved- do they need to go all the way through the hull, or could I have them fiberglassed in from the outside?

I'll be following this thread. I'm missing Port side and will be replacing at next haul out.

Trying to remember how mines were when I had the mechanic remove them. Pretty sure they were screwed.

Ended up replacing them with new 54x12 Bennetts transom mounted. Took some work to fill the recess but I really think the larger trim tabs help get the boat up on plane

Think you may be right about the screws. I called Sams and they thought the hull was actually made thicker there to accept screws 3 /4- 1 inch long, spaced about every three inches.

I could be wrong but I believe the screws are installed horizontally in the recess edge, not vertically in the hull
