  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
60' MOTOR YACHT (1987 - 1989)
OK, I've only had the boat a year ('88, 48' sundeck), and I'm learning, learning, learning.....

"Down" solenoid - died. GMade has no replacement solenoid, and sold me a new switch instead. Supposed to be "direct replacement." Not. The more frustrated I became (like they sent me the wrong wiring diagram in the 1st place... ) and the more time I spent in the anchor locker, I looked and figured the whole motor assembly is a rusted piece of - well - boat parts.

So, what to replace it with???
I'm not "happy" w/ GMade - for no definable reason, just because. Had a model BBHW. All anchor rode.

Suggestions?

I have a GM now and it works fine, but I had an Ideal on our previous boat and I think it was a better unit. Very similar, but it seems to be engineered better. I'd check them out since it would be almost a direct replacement.

Ideal designed the winch and was the original manufacturer; GM "appropriated" the design (without paying for it) and began making copies - "inferior copies," some say.

I got quite a "lecture" from Ideal on this subject when I was sorting out some GM/Ideal windlass issues last year. Ideal seems to have complete support and parts avaialble for every windlass they've made since the 40's. Pretty impressive company!
