I'm wondering if I gave the wrong information to someone, they asked me about replacing their 8V92TI's and I told them to look at Caterpillar. I seem to remember the C32 being a good replacement. I'm partial to Cats so of course I recommended them, any thoughts?

A c32 will replace oth 8v92's

c32 is way too big. Great engine but 1600-2000 hp V12s aren’t going to fit :)

Not familiar with the smaller cats, maybe the C18 will fit. What kind of boat? I think I read somewhere that cat was now offering factory remans as well

For repower you cant beat cummins factory remans. Fully rebuild with all new parts accept the block, factory warranty and significantly cheaper. I repowered my 53 with 6CTAs a couple of years ago. They have bigger options too

Another vote for Cummins 'remans'. They are basically new engines and come with a warranty, I think it is two years.

I think their M11 would be about the same horsepower as the 8v92s, but would weigh significantly less, so you might get better performance out of that as well.

Don't know where you are, but to buy them, I'd go to T&S Marine in MD on the East coast, and Seaboard Marine in CA on the West.

For CAT it's going to be C18 or C12.9. Both are available up tp 1000hp, C18 is probably bigger than C12.9 size wise but also has big boy torq @ 18 liters. C12.9 makes it power with a super charger and turbos.
Another option might be the Scania 13 liter @ 900hp, have heard really good things, only worry would be their service network depending on where you are or going.
Heard Mack Boring maybe sitting on a ton of them.
All of these are straight 6 engines, will make your engine room a dream.

I looked at a 70 MY converted to Series 60 Detroits , variable HP up to about 800 . I personally have not heard much feedback about them, but a friend with trucks thought they were great .

Truckers luv the 60s and now the 70 series. We have done light work on some marine 60s. We and the owners love them.
Finding a used set up with all the hardware would be difficult.
MTU may have a new set available.

Cat 3406s were my fav big in-line 6.
I'm not sure what they are calling it these days, "C" something.
What a brute of a block.

There is a local shop around here that sells the Scania engines.
Every time he installs one, he is impressed with it.
We have zero hands-on with these.

3406e became c15 which I think CAT isn't selling anymore, could be wrong though. Think what CAT is doing as a replacement is offering a derated c18 from max of 1150hp to something like 800hp which would really be bulletproof.

I like the idea of de-tuned C18. Bomb proof.

The previous owners of my boat changed it to MAN 2848 LE401. Brutal power with same weight, unfortunatelly same size also, the engine room is just as full with these as with the old GM, even a little more with the dry exhaust piping before water injection into the exhaust.

Great V-8 engines. They are big and available with a wet riser system.
MAN also makes a beautiful in-line 6.
