  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' COCKPIT MY-Series II (1993 - 1996)
An unfortunate event…. I slightly ran aground on an unmarked shoal. I managed to back off it however, upon arriving at the marina, I had the boat craned out and inspected the hull and the props. The hull was fine but the props are a limited damaged. I contacted my insurance company and started a claim. They requested an expected estimate. I called Holland prop and they asked what size and pitch of props. I have zero idea. He said it would be anywhere from $1500-$3000 each to be scanned and repaired. He couldn’t, understandable, say for sure without seeing the props.

does anyone know the size and pitch of props for a 1994 48’ cpmy?
Would I be better off replacing them?
Im guessing at an approx 30” props
I have 6V92 engines

Any pictures? Most props can be repaired especially if you were able to make it back under your own power. How bad were the vibration at low RPM?

Probably not worth filing a claim even if you have a real low deductible. Your premium will go up if you do.

Did you look at the hub? Most props are stamped with the diameter and pitch on the edge of the hub.

Spare props have anything on them?

No spares????
Let me help you spend lots of your money;;;
You ever dreamed about a set of those fancy props? The ones that do back flips and help your boat go 1/2 knot faster,,,
Now could be the time..

are you back in the water? If so, have a diver pull the props, they're coming off anyway. If you don't have any "load" issues, have them repaired back to what is stamped on them. Shop will be quick to advise if unrepairable

Backed off? You have more issues to look into. Strainers, impellers, crap in the intercoolers and the heat exchangers. Ask me how I know.

Not trying to be a sourpuss but check these.

that's a safe buy from that username:). That's a MONSTER prop

Original prop size will be in the Hatteras owners manual

with all the resent design developments in props that maybe worth looking into before the money gets spent. i have seen some interesting reports on efficiency/performance

uh yeah right

This has been quite an experience. Pulled the boat and inspected props as previously stated. Insurance claim filed. Sent photos to claim dept. Approval received. 10 days later finally got crane time again. Props pulled by Holland prop in Holland Michigan. A much smaller set of props and only a 4 blade temporarily put on just to get back to the slip. It was going to be a couple of weeks before the repairs were finished. It was REAL fun trying to wrangle my heavy azz 48 back into the slip with under sized props and a cross wind.

Holland prop scanned the props and it was going to be about $10k to repair them. I gave them the go ahead as I had very little choice. I just wanted to get back on the water. The props had been painted with bottom paint somewhere in history. A few days later Holland prop calls back and says they can not repair them as the hubs are cracked. They sent me photos.

The current status is it looks like they are going to order a set of 3666 five blades from CJR props in the UK. I called Sams Marine and they didn’t have any in stock that would fit. I was told Radice was the original props from the factory. I am going through the entire cooling system this coming weekend and replacing impellers. Not much water flow. I didn’t see anything in the sea strainers but I plan to take a closer look.

‘’Hopefully the shafts aren’t bent and the struts are solid. Thang God for insurance. In the end this little screw up will be about $40k. I still have a deductible but it’s nothing compared to $40k

I would not use Holland. Had a bad experience. But I guess its okay since you're not paying. If you want new sooner, I would call Johnny's Prop Shop on the east side of the state.

Thanks Sky! Hopefully you will be around this weekend. I kind of need to pick your brain about this process. Drinks are on me

I'll be there.

The marine repair industry is wide open for an honest and reliable repair shop in Michigan. I wish I had all of the time and money I have wasted on repairing the boat over the years. Between the lies, unreliability, poor workmanship and unfinished jobs, maybe its time to sell and find another hobby. My frustration is peaking. Its now looking like the middle to end of August before my boat will be repaired. My summer is screwed. It seems like every year its something new. Bad weather, repairs, broken draw bridges, its always something. Frustrating

There are several prop shops on the east side of the state. Many stock a wide variety of sizes. Call around. You may be surprised that you'll have props and be ready to go next week.

I can feel your pain. My props are special order due to the oversized shafts (still, this is a good thing) and I won't get my new props until mid to end of July. I was lucky to have serviceable spare to make a new set to match what I had.

For ship & giggles I asked my fav shop for a new pro set quote.
New 32 x 29/30 (2.5" shafts) 5 blades start around $20k.
6 to 8 weeks delivery.

I had to fumble around for a few moments,,,,,
I did get that de-fib machine to help me digest that...
I'll be better when the smoke stops coming out of my ears (and other parts)..

That’s the same as twenty grand off a set of Sharrow/Veem props that may be significantly more efficient, it’s free to find out, just sign up for their evaluation.
