  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' DOUBLE CABIN (1962 - 1965)
The 10 year old Awlgrip on our 41 has been very dull for a couple of years. It is time to repaint. I have painted her twice since we bought her in '81 and did all the prep work myself. This time I don't have time to spend the time, so I am planning to have a competent yard do the work.

The current paint is in good shape other than being dull, so wet sanding and spray painting are the major activities. I have an estimate of $40,000 for the job. I would appreciate any comments regarding the price others have paid for similar work.

A 1976 53 MY was just repainted by Composite Yacht in Cambridge, MD for a little over 40K, including hull and topsides. It was sprayed with Awlgrip. They removed all hardware, prepped, filled, faired, and sprayed. Boat looks great. I would say your price is way high.

I had my 46 Matthews DCMY rolled and tipped, from the rail up by a pro with Awlgrip last summer for $6,500. It turned out fantastic. He travels, PM if you'd like the contact info.

Have you tried FINE sandpaper followed by Finessit? I've seen it work wonders.

Judging what it cost me to repaint my 53 MY in Rhodes Greece, hull and superstructure, I think 40k is a high price factoring in the diferential in labor cost between the States and Greece.

But since you painted it twice how many manhours did you spent for prep work and spraying. get an hourly labor rate from a reputable yard and apply it to your manhours. What did materials cost you. Add the two and you have a starting point. Now escalate both labor and materials costs by say 5%/ yr. since you last painted it and add say 30% to the total for OH & profit and you have a total estimated price. Good luck.

The 5% escalation should be for materials only since the labor rate is todays labor rate. Sorry for the screw up in my prior post.

Eric, would you mind telling me more about this I have a 49 I'd like to paint. Gene

When I painted mine last year, I used $10/hr cash help from craigslist to help me send down the boat (had to buy 2 additional orbital sanders). Then I hired painter to help me roll and tip. I rolled, he tipped. (you can do it by yourself, but it works much smoother with 2).
I think the entire project cost me around $3K..
