Hatteras Model
46' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1974 - 1981)
I am going for a full paint job this winter, hull and topsides. I'm sure I will have many questions during the project, but first thing that comes to mind is the window frames. The boat is a 1976 46 c , we are going to paint her white and I would like the frames white as well. Are the frames hard to remove ? I dont want to damage the frames in the process. thanks for any input

easy to pull, if in good shape, sand blast them, acid wash, prime with dupont zinc epoxy then awlgrip 545 then topcoat. it will look great, if and minor pitting. then blast those areas more then fair on top of the green primer. if they are badly pitted then get new ones. I have been very happy with my new frames.

You might consider frameless windows. Water tight and will give the boat an updated look. Keep us posted as to your repaint project. I have the same boat and am in need of a full paint job. Do you mind if I ask how much you were quoted and by who?

Jack, I am using J&J marine fabrication in somerset MA. not far from newport RI. They built me a new hardtop, bridge enclosure, full electronics package and out riggers. As far as I'm concerned they are the best around these parts. They just completed a new state of the art building for spraying large boats. I am going for the full boot. Soda blast bottom, new paint on both hull and topsides, new teak sole in the cockpit (repair rotten core in cockpit) new bow pulpit, new bow rails, new hardware where needed, new glass and window frames. I cant say enough about the quality of there workmanship. most of the towers and hardtops you see on the new cabo's, they built. They are in the final stages of building this state of the art facility for any boat project you may need. they have also hired some of the best craftmen in this area. As far as the price, Well its hard to say, I am doing some work for them also. but i'll let you know when I get my pricing. I'll take pictures as as it progresses. Thats one thing I have'nt mastered (posting pics here) I'm sure its easy. I am intrested in the window frames you spoke of, do you have any names of who might manufacture them thanks wayne

Wayne,
Sounds like a great project for a worthy boat, please keep me posted. As far as the frameless windows, I would start here with a search for window replacement. There have been a few threads on this in the past and someone may have a source. The yard doing your work should be able to make them for you or at least know of a supplier. I would call Tom Slane 336-861-6100 and see what he uses. I know he was thinking about making a system for a DYIer to use.

i saw a very interesting window system over the weekend. We were at a sandbar by Pt Canaveral. THere was a 1973 53c with a 46 rafted to it. the owner of the 46 made his own fiberglass frames. the system looked awsome. he used 1.5x1.5 fiberglass angle and attached them together to make the exterior and interior. sorry i cant be more descriptive but the cross section looked like a Z sort of .. you get the idea. he glued the glass in with automotive windshield adhesive and the frames to the boat with 5200. they actualy look like hatteras frames. not sure how he joined the corners however. I cant remember where he got the material but it was a place in NJ.

Great question regarding window frames.....I am attempting to replace the curved windows on my 1963 41 Double Cabin and half of the screws are stripped VERY badly. I have attempted everything but drilling them out which I have never done before. Anyone have good advise on removing stripped screws around glass?
Thanks
Rian

If the screws are stripped and they turn but won't back out, then try to get something under the heads to pry them up as you turn them. If the heads are stripped and you can't get a screwdriver to hold in them, try a small ez-out.
