Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Have been trying to do this for a while.... Using paint remover and/or obitial sander "isn't cutting it".
Also doing the roof of the saloon... Have about 5 hrs into it, and looks like it would take a month, working 8 hrs a day. Have looked into buying a paint grinder, like the idea of 10,000 rpm. Also realize the chances of putting gouges into the fiberglass. But SOMETHING has to work better

Oh, then there's what primer and nonskid paints to use

What paint are you removing?

If it's imron or awlgrip it will be hard to sand. It also lasts longer.

Heat gun and scraper ??? Although I do not think that will work on most two part paints . ...Pat

Heat works. As do chemicals.

New hatch.

The PO had the deck textured and repainted. One area I wanted to stripe is the front hatch. They put texture there are well. I hate the look. Once you find a solution that works let us know. Thanks for this post.

Did the entire deck on my boat, rented a hardwood floor sander, not the stand up one but the smaller one they use for the edges, used a whole bunch of 20 grit disks and it still took a long time but it did work. Final sanding with a random orbital with 60 up to 220 disks. John

This tool is the only tool that will work for you. It is a Porter Cable paint grinder. Made obsolete by the wonderful EPA. It runs at 4500 rpm and as you can see has two depth controls. Requires a proprietary steel carbide cutting blade. for slightly cambered surfaces like boats decks its indispensable. None of the other paint stripping tools even come close. It WILL remove your non-skid with out any problems or gouging. unfortunately youll have to watch ebay for a bit because they are now made from unobtainium.

Damn...now I got another tool to buy! And I just spent the end of year tool fund.

What about sand blasting with a portable unit?

Ive never had luck with small blasting units personally. Too much compressed air necessary for what they produce. The v8 air compressors and the large hopper blasting units ive used and while effective for sure go through the blast medium plenty quick. Maybe a soda blasting company can do it for his deck but that seems to be getting out of his scope.

That tool looks a lot like the wood floor sander I rented, the disk on there looks like a 20 grit or so that I used and yes it did work, you might want to consider the rental route, it took me 2 long days to do my entire main deck, John
