56' MOTOR YACHT (1981 - 1984)
Has anyone ever removed the dinette area and replaced it with extra storage cabinets and a nice granite counter top. We never eat at the table and I really could use the extra storage for pots, pans, etc. Planning on doing this soon. We totally re-did the galley side with new cabinets and repositioned the sink into the corner and really like the configuration.

I Have the need for more storage in the galley also, the conner storage is a pain, ang have considered raising the galley dinette up and putting drawers below it. Head room in the galler is no problem. The storage above and outboard of the table is a problem.

I also wondered about if I ever decided to add another gen would I add a hatch beneth the galley table for the install,

Some 15 years ago I was abouard "Cloud High" a 50' MY, 1965 abd the galley table was removed and the steps concerted to rail type sprial. it seemed to have easier acces, but a poor choice for a boat ride on less than an ideal day.

We have been thinking the same for our 50" MY. We thought we would remove the dinette and add a counter. This way we could add washer/dryer and refridgeration/freezer in this area. It would also allow us to remove the original 1965 fridge from the galley when it dies and go under counter there with more counter space.

We don't live onboard as much as before so the stand up fridge is not a big deal. More counter space for entertaining would prob get more use, we think. We could get a good size under counter fridge and separate freezer in this configuration so we would not lose, possible gain food space.

Our boat never had laundry facilities so we have made a lot of use of the pantry where the W/D goes on the newer 53's. This would avoid us having to use it for that.

I think I was on the same 50' that Glory was on, or a similar one. They had removed the dinette and replaced it with a 43' round table and four chairs. This got me thinking to how large this space really is.

Here's some pictures from a 58' that I saw on Yacht World.

Friends of ours put their washer and dryer where the table and added a counter it works very well for them. The 58 pics are very nice. We use our aft deck as our dining room. Or eat like the rest of the world, in front of the tv. We have already remodeled the VIP stateroom, the galley and the original master stateroom was divided into two staterooms for charter when the boat was in Italy. We removed everything and put in a king size bed and all built in cabinets. Turned out great.

i saw pictures on yachtworld of a 53 that they removed the dinette table and bench seats, and ran a counter top along the stbd side wall, and had 3 loose barstools under the counter. this didn't give them more storage, but it did give them more room to move in the galley.
i like the idea of raising the dinette up, and installing drawers in the lower area where it was raised. you could use all of the old components, and just build a riser under them. this would keep the original appearance, and could be removed and put back original if so desired.

I've seen all kinds of things done with that area. I really like the photo in this thread - so much better use of that space if you have a dining area in another part of the boat. On my 58MY, I had a small dinette in that area - seating for 2 - which was a part of the crew (forward) stateroom - a little different than the 53MYs, 58YFs, and galley down 58s. I'm the 4SR, galley up model. I removed the fairly useless dinette and installed two kitchen base cabinets that each have three drawers. On top of that, I put a large mahogany top on it and finished it off with a fiddle rail. Now, I have a desk and a place to do my paperwork, a place for the laptop, and six more drawers for clothing - I live in the crew (forward) cabin, so I'm really benefiting from the additional drawers. Essentially, I created an office area that can also be used for folding laundry (since washer/dryer is adjacent to it). And if I want to eat there when it's too hot on the aft deck, I can still do that. I could also clear it off, lay a foam mattress down and use it for sleeping quarters if I really needed to do that, but I never want to have that many overnight guests that I'd have to resort to that. Still, my space there is versatile and much better than that dinette.
