Story in todays paper. Yada yada yada got to impose limits yada yada.

According to the yada yada the major source is shrimp byproduct so we propose to limit catch from four to two yada yada yada plus.....

Anyone else see our government at work here. LOL :(

They are looking at reductions in Red Drum, Snook & Red Snapper this year. 80% of all juvenile Red Snapper are killed by shrimp trawlers. There are bypasses for little fish in the nets but they are not working as intended. there are estimates of as high as 14 pounds of bycatch per pound of shrimp. The Gulf States will have to ban shrimp trawlers to have the fishery rebound. Here is a link to a local fishing organizations writeup.

I say an out right ban is needed. Trawling is an out dated and extremely destructive to the habit fishing method. I say make them use targeted fishing methods. We can no longer afford to waste the resource for the benefit of a few. I can catch a couple hundred pounds of shrimp with a can of dog food and a cast net in just a couple of hours. Zero by catch.

I'd go a step further and ban Long Lines and Trawlers.....

They will not ban the shrimpers.

We are in the middle of this crap up here on the gulf coast. Its a huge problem - I've seen the shrimpers with my own eyes pulling nets out there in the gulf.....

Basically, for the "health" of a few (and I do mean a FEW - like 100 or so) commercial shrimp boats, we all get hosed.

The trawl guys are just a bunch of knuckleheads and don't want to change. I have said for years that you can catch more shrimp with a cast net than they can with a trawl. Look at Florida's recreational shrimp regulations, They make it very hard for you to catch your own shrimp to protect the commercial guys, because the methods we could use are a lot more effective than trawling. Here is an article on alternative methods being used in NC. http://www.ncseagrant.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=story&pubid=139&storyid=210
