  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
I need to charge the system in the engine room. The boat is in Ft Pierce Fl. A local supplier told me 600 to 1000 dollars, and is only done at a remote location, requireing shipping. This dose not seem right to me. Wants to sell me a fireboy system as says the Hatteras system is obsolute. The Halon system is model 1301. Thanks for any suggestions.

What happened to the halon in the bottle? If it leaked out, you will need a rebuild kit for the valve so that it will not leak out again after it is recharged. To rebuild the valve, you must transfer the remaining halon from your bottle (assuming there is still some agent in there) to another bottle for storage so that your valve can be rebuilt. Then have your agent transferred back into your bottle plus however much more that you need to buy to fill the bottle.

Halon 1301 has not been produced since the 1990's, so the Halon that is still out there is pretty expensive. It is an excellent agent so if you can get your system recharged and free of leaks, it is your best bet.

If you do have to remove the valve, have your bottle hydro tested and stamped so that you will be good for a decade before another hydro is required.

GOOD LUCK!!!

I thought halon was outlawed Ive still got my old co2 system

Current Status of Halon 1301 Systems
If you have halon systems currently installed in your company facilities and they are located in the United States, you need to know the following facts:

You are under no legal obligation to remove systems from service.
There is no federal legal requirement to remove systems from service by any specific date.
You may legally recharge your system in the event of a discharge
Recycled agent is still commonly available for fire system recharge.
No new agent 1301 is being manufactured
You should plan the replacement of your systems with a halon alternative
