  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' LRC (1976 - 1981)
I am looking for feedback on recent experience in painting a Hatteras. Yards used, opinion of results, dollar cost per foot, time required, what would you do different, if anything, if you could start over again.

Thanks

Pete

Pete, we just had our 58YF completely repainted in '07. We used Seabrook Marine in New Orleans, LA. This yard is very professional and brings in many boats from south FL due to their quality work and reasonable rates. Feel free to email me directly at vrmmm@aol.com and I will be glad to tell you the details of my experience and what I have learned.

A couple of notes:

As part of our paint job one of the requirements was that all hardware was to be removed for rechroming/cleanup or replacement. This was a big job in itelf because all handrail stanchions, etc had to be numbered/labeled and eventually re-installed. Hopefully your hardware is in better shape than mine was and you can just tape around some of the more difficult hardware items. This will save much time in the overall job and significantly reduce the labor costs.

There is a big difference between a "scratch and shoot" paint job and a "complete" paint job because of the labor and time involved in the preparation. A scratch and shoot can look fantastic if done right but our boat was way beyond that after more than 30 years of salt-water use. The more time and care taken in prep will make the utmost difference in the finished product so finding a yard that understands this balance and is willing to work with what you and your specific boat's needs are may be the biggest challenge that you will face.

I am a do-it-yourself guy in as many ways I can but I know my limits and I recognize the fact that I cannot paint a boat like a professional (I've tried before) so we hired a yard with a good reputation to do the job right. I guess it is like finding a classic Hatteras in that it often takes a while to find the right one.

Pete,
look at some of my pictures under George in the Gallery. I am doing it right now on my 45. I researched it for 3 year with many top quality places. There are not as many choices as you may think that have the kind of facility as Jarrett Bay. On the pictures this is a real paint shop. windows, wash down lines to get the dust and dirt out, air filtration in the one shot, look at the roof line for the pink colored air filters etc. top knotch

Beautiful, George! Thanks for posting the pictures, which I have
been following in the gallery as well.

It looks just like my boat (at least for the lowest foot or so...).

I know this is only in the broadest of terms, but what kind of per foot rate can I expect for hull only?

$150-250/ft for one color, no stripes.
