So we have an '85 M/Y and it is time to pop the center window out again and exchange the refrigerator.

I have seen a few other threads that recommend Sikaflex, and I am fine with that, but what I am curious about is how was this done originally? As I recall there was a black "felt like" tape that appeared to be soaked with some very gooey, sticky stuff. Does anyone know what kind of tape that was, and if it is required? Can I get by with 1/8 thick butyl tape instead?

A specific product recommendation would be great.

A few weeks ago I replaced all three front panes on my 53 MY. I substituted black butyl TAPE for the foam pad and am very happy with the result. I felt the foam just allowed any water that leaked in around the butyl cord and caulking to to migrate to the bottom of the glass and spill over.

Thank you all, I am only doing a pop/reseat of the window frame into the boat so I can replace the refrigerator. At least that is all I hope to be doing! I am going to check out "Lifesafe" tape at West Marine and probably run with that and some Sikaflex 291 to remount the frame into the boat.

We decided to replace the frige before going to the Bahamas since the Norcold was put in back in 2009 and it has started to fade already. This time we are going with a NovaKool RFU9000.
