Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
RE: Hatteras 43' MY

Wondering if anyone knows about this 43' Hatteras.
1938-2644987 this is the Yacht World listing.

Thanks

Re: Hatteras 43' MY

Pass by it every so often. It looks clean and tidy.

Re: Hatteras 43' MY

A couple of thoughts: It is listed with Cummins 6 cyl. 450hp 903's. The 903, which was an extra cost option, are V8, and unlikely be 450hp. More likely 340 (what I have) or 380. Although not as common as the Detroit 6-71, the 903' are more fuel efficient, particularly at lower rpm's, and despite what you might hear from the uninformed, they are reliable if maintained and parts are available from your Cummins dealer.

Thanks for the info on the 903's. Owner and I finially agreed on a price. Waiting on haul out and survey. Im getting quotes on insurance now.

Re: Hatteras 43' MY

Please keep us posted there are a large number of 43DC's here and we compare notes often.

Re: Hatteras 43' MY

I though the turbo was 400 + HP.

That's what I was thinking too. I think the aftercooled ones were around 450HP. I recall a 420HP version in the 42C.

The 903's are v8, and came in 2 power versions, turbo is 400 HP, Turbo aftercooled 450HP. Big reliable engines, parts a quite pricey, most came with Capital Gears, great gear until they break, parts a sometimes hard to find and expensive.

Re: Hatteras 43' MY

A lot of the contemporary CG boats had Cummins engines of that series. There are spares out there, and they are good engines, but they do cost more to fix than DDs, because there aren't as many of them. If they survey well, though, go for it.

Re: Hatteras 43' MY

I had a diesel mechanic look over the engines yesterday. Port engine had a broken v clamp at turbo. He suggested that all clamps on both engines be replaced. He also said that both engines have no blow by. His overall opinion was they are in great shap. It does have capitol transmission. He also found the gen needs a water pump and suggested that all clamps be replaced. Impellers on engines and gen set be replaced.

Re: Hatteras 43' MY

We have capitol gears also. Did some research and most folks say they are no problem. Called an old salt I know and he said keep the oil changed once a season and they will be fine.

We also did oil analisys on the trannys when we bought and no issues with any foreign matter (like metal). They are adjustable and I have become fond of them.

Mine are turbo and rated at 340hp. Same for sgharford. According to the Cummins manual, there are 3 turbo marine pleasure duty ratings: 400hp (VT-903-M), 340hp (VT-903-M1), 450hp (VTA-903-M). 450hp is aftercooled.

Re: Hatteras 43' MY

Hey, that's a nice 43DC! I just 'borrowed' the pics on the folding ladder going to upper FB. My 2 bits with 903's - make sure neither the coolant pump nor the raw water pump are leaking. If the coolant pump leaking (there is a weep hole on lower port casting - look for rust trail), its a bear to have rebuilt as the heat exchanger and most of front of engine has to come off to get at it. This will be additionally painful if the raw water pump is and/or has leaked. It drips onto the harmonic damper that throws salt water all over the front of engine and it's 30 or so exposed screw heads that will become one with their castings. Also, while not that big a job - look for oil leaking from front main crank case seal behind harmonic damper. It can be replaced by simply removing harmonic damper, carefully driving screws into, and yanking out. Also, if original Transmission coolers look beat up, they are not replaceable with stock ones. Easy to have custom ones made up. Also, make sure engine mounts are in good shape - can't get those anymore either. If you whack a log you may have to readjust engine/shaft alignment, if ever raw water pump leaked, the harmonic damper threw water on the threads of forward engine mounts too and adjusting nut and screw are now one. Another big thing is the 'salt' filter for the coolant. These are wet lined cylinders and if the DCA additive (mostly sodium as explained to me) is not kept up by replacing the canister that looks like an oil filter, can lead to big trouble with liners leaking coolant into crankcase due to cavitation. Make sure all the fuel and oil hoses are good too, there are about 20 per engine. One especially is the oil return line on the turbo (above the transmission). Well - hope she survey's well and you have years of enjoyment with her. Look forward to seeing you around - Scott.

Re: Hatteras 43' MY

One other thing, I was told by very respected Cummins mechanic who surveyed engine that 903s like to be run hard. I believe it, mine will not get up to 180 degree water temperature unless I'm running above 1600 RPM, which is terribly inefficient as hull speed is around 1100 RPM. I cruise mine at 2450 RPM (17.5 knots) with max RPM at 2600, 2:1 Capital, 24x26 props burning about 30 gph. I feel mine doesn't get up on plane until about 16 knots, 17+ knots is happy place. May be different for 43DC with Detroit as 903's weigh twice as much.

Re: Hatteras 43' MY

The in water survey went good. Hatteras was stated above average, other than maintance. Thru hauls for engines are siezed. Needs all clamps replaced on engines and genset. A haul out is schuelded for monday.

Re: Hatteras 43' MY

Mine are 400hp :) I really like my 903's (1976 43DC).

My bad. I was going by the factory run in sheet that I thought you sent to me. It must have come from someone else.

Re: Hatteras 43' MY

You may be able to free up the through-hulls (Blaster, MMO etc) but if not, do a haulout and replace them. Not being able to shut them off is a serious potential problem.

Re: Hatteras 43' MY

Met with owner and broker on this rainy day. Should have boat hauled out for finial survey on Monday or Tuesday. Hope to settle by the end of next week. Then I will be cleaning and maintance that is needed.

I'm having trouble with insuring the boat. I got a quote from Boat US, 3700 a year. That includes my discount being a Tow Boat US captain. I think it's very high. I need suggestions on who else to get quotes from.
