  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Does anyone here use a Raymarine Quantum unit for radar? I am in Florida and most of my cruising will be on the ICW, offshore (20 miles) and maybe a few long trips (i.e. Bahamas). Would I need a more traditional unit with longer range? I like the low power and near range detail of the Quantum. This will be on a 53' Hatteras MY.

In the Bahamas since there is no online weather radar coverage past Andros I often use the radar to watch showers movements at 48 miles. Otherwise we don’t use radar that much down here anyway

Doesn't the choice really depend on what you're going to be networking the radar with?
Also, I'm not sure I trust the wifi networking to a MFD network on some of these new radars.
As far as the new type low power vs traditional high power radars go I think they both have a place.
Just removed our Furuno navnet vx2 stuff with 25kw radar, now all Simrad with 25kw radar for the heavy work and their 4G broadband radar for in close when we need it.
We do a lot of night runs to the canyons so I like the 25kw to see the ships and weather etc, and especially for birds during the day.
The new type radars are very good in close for buoys etc, no main bang, we use ours usually on 1 mile or less, but you're not going to see anything far away or weather.
Unfortunately we can't have them running at the same time as the little one will get fried.

Thanks. Yes, it depends on the other equipment, but in this case all of the equipment is old.:) So, I would be building a whole new setup. I like the idea of having both. I think the quantum can also be hardwired, and that was how I was planning on installing it. I would like to be able to mirror the MFD on an iPad if possible, but not sure if that is a feature.

I was thinking that good sonar would be more useful because of the river. Is that reasonable, or is a depth finder good enough? I wouldn't be fishing a lot.

So look at the technology. The new pulse uses about the same amount of power as a traditional 4kw. It's not that much power difference.

The broadband will detect targets in close. Well beyond where the traditional radar works. The domes are never as good as the open arrays and of course the larger the better.

I sell more standard than broadband for good reasons.

PM me if you need help with this.
