  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' MOTOR YACHT-Series I (1981 - 1984)
Our 48MY has a new and larger exhaust system.

The original configuration was designed (I'm told) for 671N's and when Hatteras offered 6V92TA's they didn't increase the exhaust pipe size  , just added a diverter for part of the cooling water. After enlarging the exhaust system, the yard left the diverters in place and seem to have shut down most or all of the flow from the port diverter, but not the starboard. On our trip, I'm noticing the lockers that the exhausts run through on the starboard side are hotter than the port and there is a really significant flow of discharge water from the diverter thu-hull on the starboard. I'm inclined to shut this valve down and send all the water out the exhaust piipes. Can anyone see a reason not to?

Sorry to bombard the forum with so many questions, but I need and appreciate the voices of experience.

I'd say V&V- verify and validate. You say the exhaust systems is "new". Was it installed by the PrevOwner, or is it an installation on your nickel? If you had it done, what were the specs on which the installation was based and if from the factory, call them, i.e. what is the exhaust configuration the factory uses for 6V92's, in which no diverter is installed.

Hatteras is very good about responding to questions from the field from owners of pre-owned boats. Finally, why were the diverters left in place, if the new configuration is to factory spec for a non-diverter configuration? Your remarks indicate the the "correct" 6V92 exhausts, did not have diverters.

My 2CW and asking questions of a question... :)
