  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Guys I have Raritan heads on my boat. I don't have model numbers yet. There older units though. The motor is in the back and there is a 3in. cover plate in front. The trouble I have is that if there is any liquid in the bowl when you start to flush. It will spit out at you just a little, just for a second then continue to flush OK. I have 2 units only one does this. This is the kids head. Any thoughts on this. Do I have something caught in it. The tank was just pumped it is empty. I thought I would check with you guys before diving in. YUCK! Bill

They are probabably crown heads. My least favorite. There is a polyurethane plate that goes in the front and works as a seperator for the discharge. They deteriorate and cause problems. Be careful removing the front cover they crack easily. Good luck

Trojan,

I know that this will sound really strange, but How are your House batteries?
I have the same style heads. One has a new motor the other is an older unit. This spring the older unit started doing the exact same thing that you describe. I knew I was going to have to replace my House battery anyhow, but it did go Flat (7 years old) Put the new battery in and no more spit back from the Older head unit.

Just a thought and I may be "all wet" but that's my experience. I'd start by checking the battery voltage and electrical connections. Those pumps are not cheap.

The batteries are new lots of power. I don't know if the crown head is a model of Raritan or not.But I know they are Raritan. The trouble starter whan I had a group of people stay on the boat and they overfilled the front houlding tank. Well, I will operate on it today. It would not suprise me that there is a foreign object in it. The group was not boat people. I found the paper work on the unit last night, but I didn't look at the model number. Just the parts list. Front cover plate and O-ring seal. I think I will start there. I just hope it does not need parts. Bill

If these are raw water supplied, have you replaced the impeller in the rear of the motor? To test, remove the hose going from the pump to the top of the bowl. Hit the switch and water should flow out.

The head is fixed. I removed the front cover and found the trouble. Thanks for all the ideas. Bill

And.....the trouble was........what? Don't leave us in suspense like this. Inquiring minds want to know. :D

Lets just say if I could find the young lady that put it in the head. She would not like me anymore. Bill

i understand your pain... having recently had to open a duckbill valve clearing what must have been a similar item! of course, whoever upgraded the boat to vacuflushes a few years ago never thought anyone would do such a thing and buried the inline valve in the outboard corner of the stbd ER, under the water heater... while i was in there i added some extra hose to make it more accessible and be able to lift it before opening it to avoid spilss :-(
