Hi All,

Splashing Thursday and forgot all about being able to steer (minor oversight) ;)

No time to search archives, I know theres a lot out there on this subject, kinda flat out !

Does anyone have a link to a great thread or a write up.

Hynautic tank has 45lbs of pressure and fluid shows 3/4 full.

45lbs seems high I think 30 is the highest I ever saw. I had to pump mine up this year and the started turning the wheel in one direction many many times. once it bottomed out I went in the opposite direction until it bottomed out, then I was done. you should be able to do the same. good luck

Gene,
The simple way is set the pressure at 40 psi and turn wheel back and forth until you get a positive stop on the helm. then set pressure at 30 psi. 90% of the time that is all it takes. If that does not work then it will need purging.

Hey Dave,

No bleeding of air as wheel hits positive stop ?

There's no positive stop on the wheel. You feel pressure build with resistance until it's hard to turn.

Yes there will be a positive stop. The air makes it's way to the reservoir.
As I said this works 90% of the time. You asked for the simple way. Feel free to do the full bleed out procedure if you like.

Dont force it when it gets hard to turn. You will rip the stops off the rudder board. The wheel will turn with almost no effort until it bleeds. Then it feels firm but turns without force. If you push it to the limits and keep turning something will break.

When the air makes its way to the reservoir there is a positive stop. No one is talking about putting a sumo wrestler on the wheel. The relief valve will prevent any damage from happening.

One of my customers ripped out the stops turning it like a gorilla. I think the relief valve was a bit stiff and the rudder board needed to be replaced. Never underestimate the ethanol fueled DIYer. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer but you never know.

I also had a line blow while bleeding an AP pump. It was old and just pissed fluid all over like one of the kids pump up waterguns. Nice mess.

Dave Thanks for the no BS explanation!

Is this the same with power steering? I noticed my pressure was around 20PSI. Usually it's at 30PSI but everything is performing well. First time Adding air to the system. My 46c never needed air in the 12 years I owned it.

On the left side of the Sam's page, in the tan navigation bar is "Tips & Tricks", and in there is a single page writeup from Hatteras on the purging procedure.

So, two mouse clicks, one page, done.

Hi All,

Dave, I went with your procedure and all seems OK. I think i'm going to lower the pressure at the tank from 45 lbs to 35 lbs.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the feedback !!

By all means lower the pressure to around 30 psi. Glad you are going to get to use the boat.
