I don't recall this issue being discussed in detail on the forum, so I'll ask. Does anyone know of a way of converting a DD 8v71 from a block-mounted spin on oil filter to a remote filter, i.e. some part mounted on a bulkhead and connected to the engine with hoses? I ask myself this question every time I go through an oil change and make a real mess changing the spin-on filter.

Thanks in advance for some feedback.

I use a flexible plastic bowl (with oil rags underneath just in case) under the filter and then piercing the bottom to drain it. Make sure the bowl is big enough to hold oil from filter as well as anything in overhead lines (can add a little). Give them a while to drain and then spin the filter off enough to break seal and let air in further draining them. Carefully remove bowl and seal with lid.

Then I just slide garbage bag over filter and remove. There still will be some mess but minimal and taken care of by oil rags.

I give myself plenty of time for oil change and do it slowly to avoid and spillage. But if yours are in a tight spot then it may make sense to invest in remoting them.

Yes, you can get an adapter kit to remote mount the oil filter(s).
Also,
At least on my 8V71's there is a 1/4" NPT drain plug on the factory block mounted filter adapter. It is underneath at the base of the filter. I just put a small bucket under the plug, remove the plug, drain drain the oil from the filter, remove the filter. Almost no mess or spills. Just make sure that the small bucket will hold the amount of oil in the filter. A friend of mine with a similar Hatteras with 8V71's put small ball valves in place of the 1/4" plug with hoses on the outlets of the valves. When it's filter change time he routes the hose over to a bucket and drains the filter. For safety he puts a cap on the end of the hose in case the valve inadvertently gets turned.

I cut out the side of an antifreeze container to catch my oil, it is very tight and that is about all I can fit under there.

Silly question but how do you pierce the bottom? I can get a hole in the side but then when you spin the filter…we’ll you know. I’ve tried various things but can’t get the leverage. Last change I sacrificed an old screw gun with a drill bit to put a hole in the bottom. Suggestions?

Here's what works for me.

I cutout a wooden tray to accept a Tupperware pan. I wrapped a line around the exhaust manifold to hold the back (closest to motor) in place.

Stuff the pan with oil absorbent pads and unscrew the bottom filter. Once you grab it, you can unscrew the top filter and what little oil is left is also caught. I used this for the last couple of years, and the oil changes are spill-free. You could pierce the filter, but then the pan might become unstable with that much weight. Just leave the jig in place until the new filters are on.

I came up with this simple jig after my helper dropped a dirty filter in my bilge. The reason I had a helper is so that wouldn't happen in the first place. Good help is hard to find.

That was the first big project for me last year. We converted to spin-on, mounted on each side of the walkway. A block off plate with lines extended around the engine.
The first 150 hours of drip pans and oil pads was enough to go crazy and ruin many shirts. Message me for pics. Have them somewhere.

For us and our customers, Large diesel engine oil changes can take 2 or 3 days.
We never handle hot oil filters.
For details, let me know.

Found the pics. Forgive the mess.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. Timeless 72, this is exactly what I had in mind. Do you have a picture of the plate you installed on the engine block and can you tell me where you bought the parts for this modification (engine piece and remote filter housing)?

I will take better pics next time down. Let me dig through the receipts for that supplier. On the tip of my tongue right now... An old diesel guru came up with the idea while we were stuck on the lakes last summer. I can't take all the credit!
