For my inverter, I'd like to make a modification inside the A/C breaker panel in my 86 36C. There is an "E" shaped steel plate which transfers the current from the hot main to the individual breakers. I'd like to make a small piece that has the same characteristics as that plate. Is the steel that plate is constructed of anything special? Is it stainless? I'm not knowledgeable enough to know by looking at it. Thanks in advance.

on my 1972 58yf, that plate is aluminum

Stainless is an electrical resistor. Great for making toasters, not so much for connections.

Aluminum is a good conductor, so my guess is that Bigbill is right.

Thanks for the help. Based on your thoughts, I'm assuming it's either aluminum or, because of the shine, something tinned. I found a source for a small piece of 110 Copper bar which should do the trick.

Many of the breaker panel parts are still available and easier to buy than make. Also remember the risk of modifying it could be a problem. Especially if there is a fire and the insurance company finds it. They are looking for reasons to not pay.
