  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Looking for input on anchor chain. We have a 53' MY Hat, using a 110 pound Bruce anchor. Will 3/8 " G4 chain @ 200' be enough for scope and holding. Anchorages are ICW, Pamilco, and maybe a max depth of 25 to 30'

Thanks

If the pulpit is 7 foot off the water you are looking at a max of 37 foot depth for calculating scope. Do your math and see if it meets your requirements. depending on the scope you want to use in different conditions it may surprise you.

Buy "The Complete Book of Anchoring and Mooring" by Earl Hinz. Anything you want to know is in there, and it is a valuable reference.

Yes, you should be fine with 200'. I have the same setup and have never had a problem. That is heavy chain and you will find that you can usually get by with about 4:1 scope.

I rarely use more than 150' when anchoring south of new England, you rarely in water deep enough to need more

That said, just in case, i have another 200' of line after the 250' of chain. Never had to use it, even in Block island where it's up to 50' deep in Salt pond, the chain was wnough

Thanks guy's. I was looking to see what others had for ground tackle. I'm able to get my hands on 200' 3/8 G4 chain and a 110 pound bruce this weekend at a very good price.

Sounds like the deal makes it right. you may need to add some line to it for deeper anchorages in heavier weather but it should work for most of your daily needs.

Especially with the 110lbs Bruce on a 53MY. I used one for 3 years on a 70' sky lounge 20' beam boat and it always held well up to 40kts. I ve since upgraded it to a 176 pounder but the 110 will be perfect on a 53

and be sure the shank of the anchor is not too thick for the anchor roller/pulpit, I have a 110 on my 61' and it is close to notfitting . I use a wood block between the tines of the anchor and the roller ass'y when I need to cinch it down tight in bad weather........Pat

I think the words I used were pretty clear: "I used", "I upgraded". Different than "I owned", "I bought", "I had" which would have implied ownership...

You're right pascal used and upgraded do not indicate ownership, however the most over used word in the English language "I" does.

Don't know why ownership of the ground tackle has anything to do with the poster's question. Pascal gave his opinion and experience on the question, which is what was sought.

Thanks guys for your input. Bought the 110 pound bruce and 200' 3/8 chain for now.
