I recently purchased a 1987 63' MY. It is in Seattle and I'm bringing the boat down to San Diego where I live. During sea trials the port engine was overheating. The diesel mechanic decided to pull both heat exchangers and I"m glad he did. The prior owner could not tell us the last time he boiled the exhangers. When I get an after photo I will be sure to post but thought you might enjoy seeing what happens when you ignore regular maintenance on the exchangers. Lesson learned

Lucky you didn't start your southern trip and get stuck. I'm going to put Barnacal Buster thru mine and see if it effects the temperature. What did he charge to remove and replace and the boil out?

I haven't gotten the bill yet, he was doing a few other things before the trip, changing oil and filters on both engines and both generators, replacing a water pump, changing impellers, replacing all of the batteries as they were all dry....the boat had been sitting for 3 years. I'm guessing around $3 to $4k for all of the prep work before making the trip.

Yes 12V71TiS, they both have 2300 hours on them. No smoke at all during sea trials.

Don't forget the change both fuel filters on each motor if needed.

Thanks! We changed both screw on filters and both dual racors for each motor. I've got a case of extra Racors on hand just in case any sludge gets thrown from the bottom of the tanks

Run for an hour or two and she the hell out of the boat. See if there is sludge in the tank. I'd so have them cleaned and the fuel poinshed. Don't venture out with dirty fuel.

Ron,

I am sort of in the same situation as you having my engines serviced after the PO's neglect. My mechanic (Tom Hugg) is also taking apart and cleaning the fresh water side of the cooling system!

Hope it all comes out clean! At least we now know what not to do :)

Ron, I think you're optimistic on your cost estimate. Replacing both battery banks (8 batteries), is going to run 2,500 to 3,000. Both engines, trannys, both gennys, oil changes with filters, will run close to a grand just for the oil and filters (40+ gallons of oil!). Gasket kit for the heat exchangers, impellers, plus labor... It adds up quick!
