We have a 24" prop on a 1 3/4" shaft that has come loose a second time after having been installed by a diver.I can feel free play in the key-way while rotating the prop, but it does not wobble on the shaft. I know the boat needs to come out of the water for a proper repair, my question, is an enlarged key-way in the prop repairable, or should I plan on replacing it? Thanks, Craig

The key is a guide. The prop and shaft fit with friction and compression on the taper. The prop and shaft need to have a matching taper.

What Scott said. The prop shouldn't ride or be tight on the key. It also should be loose or have any play on the shaft. If it's not tight and installed properly fix it immediately. A poorly fit prop will put stress on the shaft and it will eventually snap, most likely just forward of the prop hub.

When you pull the prop, at least dye penetrant the shaft to make sure you have no cracks in the keyway.
