I have 8V71TIs that still have the canister type secondary fuel filters.

I recently read (in a book) that when changing secondary fuel filters you should never 'Pre-Fill' them with new diesel fuel. I suspect this is due to a concern for introducing any dirt or contaminants on that might get to the injectors.

I'm just curious, in the 'real world' how the experienced folks on this forum do it. 'Pre-Filling' the canister (or spin-on filter) certainly make it simple to restart the engine without a complicated priming procedure or the installation of a manual or electric pump to get new fuel from the primary filter to the newly replaced secondary filter...

Just curious what you all do. Thanks. Jon

I install them 'dry' and prime with the priming pumps. 6V92TA.

No, pre-fill is the preferred method.

I strain the fuel through a paint filter. Fill it up or prime it from a pump or, as I do, cross feed it from other motor.

Hello, I pre fill with Diesel Kleen, I got that tip for a member here.

Those are easy to change to spin-ons. It will make life much easier. Then, if you run 2 micron filters in your dual racors, you'll almost never have to change a secondary.

I always pre-fill with Diesel Kleen

DK is a good idea as you know its clean. We used to use ATF back in the day. That worked well too.

Pre fill but pour the fuel into the center of the filter so it pushing itself thru the filters under pressure.

I have the spin on this but I also filled with Diesel Kleen.

Does anybody know the part number for the spin on fuel filter conversion kit for a 12v71?

Thanks.
