  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' TWIN CABIN (1965 - 1971)
Have any of you done any business with Pompanette recently? I'm trying to buy a pair of new helm chairs for my boat. The process seems to be way more difficult that it should need to be.

I bought some deck boxes from them several years ago and had problems as well. It seemed like they didn't stock anything and the wait time was quite long as they had to manufacture them for me.

And---on the other hand---they were great with me. I went to the store in Lauderdale and the manager was extremely helpful in sizing my pedestals and at a significantly discounted purchase price. He then threw in some bolts and another part gratis and thereafter gave helpful advice about the removal of the old pedestals.

I am interested in purchasing 2 new helm chairs for my 41 TC. The originals are Pompanette and they have lasted since 1966. I'd like new ones. The originals like I have now were apparently discontinued just recently. The model that I'm interested in is an AS 19. They come with arm rests which I don't want. So these will have to be custom made for me without them. I also want custom white upholstery with blue piping. I don't mind waiting for them and I don't even mind the cost. The 2 chairs, new pedestals and shipping (as near as I can tell because it isn't easy to get these answers) will likely cost me around $3,000. I have been to the store in Ft Lauderdale three times. Most recently yesterday. The one and only person in the entire building there could not be any less interested in making this sale. It's like pulling teeth to get this to happen. Maybe he's decided that because I have a POS old boat that he's wasting his time talking to me. With only one live body there working and the back half the showroom empty, it looks like the place is going out of business. I remember being in that store a decade ago and it was beautiful, clean, busy, well stocked with merchandise and a vibrant sales staff. The guy in the store admits that they haven't printed a new brochure in years. And their website sucks. I'm ready to pull the trigger on the 50% deposit for this but I really have an uneasy feeling.

It's a bad sign when it's hard to spend your money with a vendor. What can you expect if there is a problem?

I bought 2 Stidd helm chairs for our 41 DCMY last year. Great service, great chairs, discounted boat show price 2 months after a show I didn't attend.

The card I have is that of Colin O'Neil. He is described as "product line manager". His cell# is 954-614-6041.

You might try giving him a call to express your concerns.

I acknowledge that the fellow I first encountered at the store was wholly disinterested in my existence and generally, the focus seemed to be on selling what they had rather than seeking to accommodate one's particular requirements.

However, as stated, Mr. O'Neil was MOST helpful.

That sums it up precisely. I was nothing more than a "speed bump" in that guy's day.
I will give Mr. O'Neil a call tomorrow. Thanks for the info!

I left a message for Colin O'Neil at 10 this morning. No call back. The sales prevention department wins again.

I have received some sage advice from Jim Rosenthal. Jim suggests that I can certainly get my existing chairs totally redone and made like new for a fraction of the cost of the proposed replacements. I have decided to take Jim's advice.

Ah, yes, well in session at a store near you. It's dismal when the only way you could buy something is to cram the money down someone's throat to get their attention.

Pompanette sounds like they might be going out of business. They're certainly well on the way to their destination.

I had lunch at Bimini Boatyard today (almost next door to Pompanette) with a broker friend who is at least as cynical as I am. He is somewhat familiar with what's going on over there and what the place now looks like. I was telling him this story of my new helm seat quest. When I got to the the part about their requiring a 50% deposit with the order, he quickly said "Like hell I'd give them that money. You might never see it again" Interesting that he had arrived at the same conclusion. Based upon the available information, which is admittedly sparse, I do not have a sufficient comfort level in proceeding with new helm chairs from Pompanette. I wish this was otherwise. I like their helm chairs.

Just for your info! I have 2 helm chairs by Lee i really like them the high backs and wide bottoms. I went to Lee in wilmington N.C. not only were the chairs not avable just as mine but the new ones were priced insane. Lee does their chrome plating in Newbern N.C. I took the chairs apart and painted them and had all the parts rechromed including the stantions total price for both chairs was 800$ including painting. They really look grate. Forgot they have new paded arm rest and new cushions need to add another 600$ for a grand total of 1400$. Alot cheaper than the new ones at just over 3000 each. That did not include the 3.5 inch stantions which i suspect will be around 600 each Tim

Eric - just sent you a pm. John

Expanding on Tim a bit, I made new arm rest covers for my original Pompanette chairs from new vinyl. I was in a sewing phase (bought a walking Pfaff sewing machine on ebay) and made new cushions for the boat. My grandfather use to make and hang curtains for a living, including all the curtains on the SS United States when she was brand new (the fastest cruise liner ever built), and I wanted to see if I had it in me. Anyway, the original 1975 Pompanette guts were in OK shape, just plywood screwed to an aluminum frame. The vinyl material is simply stapled to the plywood. If you carefully remove the staples you can remove the old vinyl covers and cut the panels apart to use as a template on the new material (the original seams where heat sealed). Add a 1/2" on the seamed edges so you can sew. Just add piping between the seam at this point. My existing foam was in pretty good shape, they wrapped the foam in a thin sheet of plastic that actually held up pretty well over 35+ years. The seat covers and backrest would be the same gig, mine were in decent enough shape that I left then alone. Sure you know it, but sailrite.com has all the goodies. Short and skinny, you could have them reupholstered and refinished like Tim suggested.

Colin O'Neil did call me back this morning. I expressed my concerns and related my experience. He did say that they were "short staffed" in Ft Lauderdale and that they were looking to hire additional employees for that location. I was quite blunt in telling him that it looked to me like the place was going out of business. He did not confirm or deny. I told him that at this point I had made a decision to move in a different direction. He seems like a nice guy. Too bad he didn't call me back sooner.

Its a shame about some of the old time co's faultering. When I was a kid I was more excited about going to the Pompanette store in Lauderdale than I was about seeing the Rat up in Orlando.
I cant tell you how many times I've had the bridge chairs recovered but they last about 5 years with the Fla sun and the use we give them. Like the other soft goods its a continuous process. I think my canvas guy charges about a hundered bucks ea. if the foam is ok.

Update: I did order new custom made helm chairs from Pompanette. I ended up calling the guy at Pompanette in California which is where the "Angler's Specialties" line of their chairs is built. Scott was very helpful and nice to deal with. The chairs arrived and have been installed. There were a few small issues which are being taken care of without a question. They're not cheap - The 2 chairs custom made with arms deleted, 2 new aluminum pedestals and shipping to Maryland was around $2,800.

Here's the "before" picture. Major changes are: the new mahogany chart box, helmseats, and overhead console rebuild with all new electronics. There are lots of other small detail changes. Warning - DON'T do the math.
