  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
As it turns out Pompanette will sell the pedestal tubing separate. The tubing is held to the base via press fit and swaging at the bottom, which is easily punched thru with a hydraulic press. I used a 75 ton press, but it only took 10 tons of force to push the tube out of the base.

Currently, 24" x 2 7/8" OD polished and anodized is $120, 28" is $150 plus UPS shipping from FL. (I needed 2 @24 and 1 @28) I plan to press in the new tube and drill/tap one or two holes in base bottom rather than swage but it could be swaged by hand with a hammer if needed.

Having said all that, one is not saving all that much money over Defenders price of aprox $250 for base and (28") tube (other dealers seem to be more like $350 each for the same thing) but Defender is out of stock and not getting any more in for over a month, thus I went this route. Mentioning it here as simply an option some might consider.

Pompanette phone for this is 954-525-6367 ask for Glady.

So maybe I should only have posted if I had them buffed and polished, rather than an even better method ?

I have not tried before, but I think you could take the pedestals to a plating shop and just have them buffed and polished. If you go this route please post the outcome. I have scratched pedestals also.

For what ? I recall trying Amazon using keywords Pompanette pedestals and coming up with nothing. They do have Todd and Springfield pedestals.

Nice to have the equipment to do this. A decent alternative to those who have the ability to DIY this type of job. Pompanette's stuff is pricey but the quality backs it up. In the grand scheme of things, the cost of those pedestals is not bad considering it's for a big boat and they will last longer than most other stuff on the boat. I need a $2,000 hydraulic cylinder for my swim platform. That price is insane and they seem to fail often. Unfortunately if I want to play I have to pay. I may try to source a different brand cylinder as these have proven to be weak.

Jack, do you have specs on the cylinder? You might have some luck on McMaster-Carr, or looking in B&H.

I dunno...maybe their pedestals are as good as possible for clear anodized aluminum....but you would probably be amazed at how scarred up mine are...all three of them but especially the captains chair pedestal...one was so bad I had to hammer the footrest off...full force steel hammer blows moving it 1/16" at a time for something that normally would lift right off easy. I should post photos.

I plan on having my mechanic try to source this. He works on a lot of heavy equipment and has trusted hydraulics shops he deals with.

Jack my friend / class mate has a company that is all he does is rebuild hydrolic cylenders from 1 inch to i have seen some that would not fit in the bed of a truck. i will be glad to send you his info. He is in Ashvill N,C.

Thanks Tim. This will most likely be a spring project as its too late for me to move it now.

Probably the lip seals in the piston part of the cylinder. Every thing I've rebuilt lately with seals in it has had rubber parts that just seem to disintegrate.as I've said before rubber today is crap. I have a 5 year old Bobcat Skid steer that is garaged all of the cylinders started leaking. The seals that came out were not worn just chunks of mush. I'd do both cylinders when you get it off.
