  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
56' MOTOR YACHT (1981 - 1984)
Yes the PO painted much of the aframosa panels white. I have been stripping and returning the interior to her former glory. Almost done with the lower passageway walls. He however painted the interior door panel, which are so well made I am hesitant to try and remove the stop strips holding them in, that is unless the door panels were inserted into dados in the styles and rails during door assembly. Does anyone know how the doors are constructed? Easiest solution would be a dip strip but was thinking of replacing door panels with a lighter shade of teak. Any advice? Thx Mark

No insight from anyone?

Sorry... I've never had one apart...

I don’t know the answer to the question, but IMHO you’re doing the lord’s work there. I think you’ll be rewarded for your efforts on resale, every boat I saw with a light painted interior was an automatic no from me when we were shopping for one of these. It was trend in the 90’s and 2000’s that has thankfully died off, new boats are starting to have a lot of wood in the interiors again.

I suppose it depends what the PO used to paint the afromosia paneling- if it's enamel, it might come off fairly easily. If (God forbid) he used a two-part paint like AwlGrip, it won't let go easily if at all.

You might have to re-veneer.

Thanks, it's very rewarding. Hatteras didn't use cheap materials so they take a second life very well. So far I have removed the 4 curves steps to the galley and replaced with 5 steps to reduce the riser height. (Save my old knees) The old washer dryer has come out and replaced with two separate. Floor in lower passageway replaced with Brazilian cherry. All mahogany walls in lower passageway stripped of paint. Removed the lower headliner, insulated & sound proofed, headliner panels fabricated and lights replaced with LEDs. Replaced upper & lower steps with Brazilian cherry. Next project, is the galley. Nxt week starts the demo. Still need to come up with a plan to convert all annuciator alarms and engine gauges to digital. Ran cat 6 cable throughout the boat to accommodate a surveillance system. Any ideas?

It takes 4 times with the stripper and then some sanding before applying a stain to match the woods up with each other. In the main salon the plan is to re-veneer with phynolic backed veneer.

I haven't taken one apart, but they appear to be a typical rail and stile panel construction. The vertical rails and the horizontal stiles capture the 1/4 inch panel. There is a dado groove the full length of the rails and on both sides of the middle stile. Bottom line, it ain't coming apart without some damage... the panel IS NOT retained by a molding.

Very Helpful I guess I'll have to dip the entire door. Thx

if you dip the entire door you can expect some of the glue used building the door to also let go also..

I'd almost prefer to have the door come apart so that the panels can be finished separately. I would like to contrast the mahogany frames with teak panels to give the door depth. Then reassemble and finish coat once assembled.
