  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I know this has been discussed in previous forums. But I am curious if there are any new opinions or products regarding Teak and Holly interior flooring. I have seen Plasteek installed in a Hatteras and really like the look. However I am hesitant about the 6' wide thing and having to seam it. I would really like to find a typical plank style of laminate flooring simply because of ease of installation. Does anyone know of a Teak and Holly design available in plank style? Any help, pros, cons etc would be apprecialted.
Ben

Amtico comes in planks.

Thanks-I havent found any info on the net where they supply Teak and Holly design. I thought it was available.

it can be bought from thee web or if you go to the web look for local dealer or it can be order from Jarrett Bay as I know we install it.

I'm still happy with my Amtico after about 4 years. It was expensive but I've been very happy with it and would use it again.

I too am very happy with my Amtico with a couple of recommendations for future installations.

Since either the wood base material or the Amtico have different expansion coefficients due to temperatures, I recommend that the Amtico and the surface to receive it are of the same temp at the time of application so as to not get spaces later. The other recommendation is to consider installing underlayment or at the very least, be certain that the surface is absolutely fair by using fillers etc.

Been there, done that.

I am very happy with Plasteak. We installed that stuff in our little galley and in our head. It has been there for 5 years and still looks perfect. This product is very high quqlity, easy to bend, and comes with a can of the recommended glue. Good stuff.:)

I put Plasteak in my galley and both heads 3 years ago and it still looks great! Cleans up easy and you don't have to refinish it every couple of years or so. Most of my guests think it's real Teak & Holly up until I tell them different.

I put a Vinyl Teak looking laminate down last spring on my aft deck. It is constantly getting wet back there and wetting the carpet. It comes in 3'' x 3' strips and it comes with pressure sensitive glue on each strip to hold it all together They over lap 1 inch on 2 sides so there are no seams to collect anything if done correctly.. The material just floats and is not glued down. You can glue the outer edges if you want. I sealed the edges with bathroom caulk to keep the dirt from getting under the vinyl. It's made for bathrooms and does not mold and is water proof. It looks great and so far it shows no signs of any wear. Its not slippery at all. We also have a water proof throw rug that lays under and in front of the couch. The material is flexible like warm linoleum and can be repaired should it get cut or scratched. We entertained on the forth of July and had 50+ Guest tramp through the boat spilling boose and food with no signs of wear. It cuts with a knife and lays real easy. Everyone compliments on it's looks the minute they step on the boat. It sells at Home Depot for $44. bucks a box. It was about $250. bucks to do the whole aft deck. The admiral loves it and rates it an A+. No more moldy carpets. No waxing. Just mop or squirt off with the hose. Its not Plasteak, but its a whole lot cheaper and no worries. I don't know how it will react to direct sunlight like on the main deck. Thinking about doing the galley, heads and fly bridge this spring.

Bill,
I am very interested in your floor. Since the storm, We rebuilt the house to look like the old one and have some 1200 sf of second floor porches. The roof extends out over the porches, but they do get some sun. They are 10 feet wide on the South and North sides of the house. Instead of painted pine they are decked with 3/4 inch plywood sealed with epoxy resin on the top side, which I want to cover with something that would look like the old painted wood porches. Based on your experience, do you think this product would work in this application.
I checked the HD web site and found various colors of the following:
Trafficmaster Allure, Mahogany Resilient Vinyl Plank Flooring (24 Sq. Ft. Per Case) Model 60914 $2.39/Sq. Ft. $57.31/CA Case Covers 24 Sq. Ft. Easy GripStrip™ installation – Lays directly over your old floor; no floor prep or messy glue needed! ... Completely waterproof.

Is this what you used?

Thanks,
Vincent

It sounds like it, but there are 4 types of wood if I remember. I will try to find the name of it. As I said I don't know how it will be effected by direct sunlight. Although mine on the aft deck does see direct sun light now and then with no trouble.

I bought a box of the Trafficmaster Allure flooring at Home Depot, $42 / box which covers 24 SF and workes out to less than $1.80 / sf. It weighs about 35# per box. I liked the trial area and am in the process of covering some 1100 sf of covered exterior porch.

It is all vinyl, has a 25 year warranty; although the web site says for interior use and to avoid direct sunlight due to fading. It is extremely easy to install. To cut it you score and snap. Each piece glues to the other on all sides making a solid sheet. At each corner there is a small gap which would probably allow some water to leak underneath. You could probably squirt a small spot of caulk at each corner as you lay it down. Time is too short, and the project too big for me to caulk since we have a party scheduled for Saturday and I have a day job.

The HD stores in my area did not carry "teak", but I plan on ordering a box and trying it on the aft deck of Lilly Marie.

Vincent,
We refurbished the aft head last Spring and that is the flooring we used. So far it has been great. The install was quick and easy and it seems to be standing up to our grandchildren dragging the Beach, the Ocean and a multitude of toys across it. Spills don't seem to affect it and it has kind of a raised grain so the non skid properties are very good. You really have to get up close to see that it isn't real wood. We are happy enough with it that we are going to use it in the Aft Stateroom next.

We have the teak and love it. It's been on the aft deck for a year now and it looks brand new. I like the water proof part. No waxing. It's designed for use in the bathroom. Were going to do the 2 heads and the galley this spring. I might put it in the fly bridge also. I sealed the edges with a brown sealant to keep the dirt and crap from getting under it.

That's what we used on Saraswati, but in Cherry. We did all the interior floors except the galley which already had a nice teak parquet (sp?) floor. All the other areas were carpet over ply and we wanted the rich look and easy cleaning of a floor (we have dogs). We LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Very easy to work with (Amanda did the install), looks great, and has a 25 year warranty to boot. Highly recommended.

Please let me know how it looks? I'd be very interested in seeing the teak...the cherry looked VERY real. In fact, if you get a box and and up with any small scraps...I'd gladly pay shipping to get a small sample...

Dave,
I a happy to send you a sample when I get the Teak Traffic Master. Right now I am in project overload and it may be a while before I get around to flooring on the aft deck.
Regards,
Vincent
