Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Ok, no hissing. I do not have an air filter on either my genset (Onan 7.5Kw) or the mains (6-71N's). From what I see, none was OEM installed on this 1972 43'MY vessel. I boat in the northern Great Lakes so there is little particulate in the air, but then I suspect the 'perspired' oil from the 6-71's quickly traps any 'dust'. At any rate, how highly recommended are air filters for any of the engines?

Hey SB... Dont those 6-71s have silencers on them? I am not sure, but I think all engines (gas and diesel) need backfire arresters of some sort (?). Whats the blower intake covered with now? The generator should have a silencer just for the dBa as well. Those diesels suck a lotta air! ws

My 8v53's have the intake silencers and the filter is a foam sleeve that goes over it.

Yes, both the mains have a silencer along side, both to the port side. About 2' long 3" x 6". Is the filter internal inside the silencer and behind the perforated endplate?

I've never seen a filter inside the blower silencers. Mine certainly don't have any.

Detroits are so tough, they don't need no stinking filters. lol

Is this the setup you have? Mine is an 8V71N.

The airsock does the filtering. There is nothing between the sock and the blower intake save for the blower screen.

Below my air intake is the crankcase vent. It blows directly into the air intake. I disassembled the intake and found pounds of oily grit caked to the inside of the can that the sock wraps around. I figured all of that mess was sucked in from the crankcase vent.

My airsock gets loaded with oil from the vent.

If your crankcase vent is configured like mine, I would think that you should use the airsock just to prevent the oil mist and any grit from getting into your airbox.
