Spin-on oil filters

I just had my DD mechanic to the boat today to figure out what was wrong with my governor. It turned out to be a bad gov. spring. In talking, I asked him if he could get me the screw-on oil filter adaptors. He said, don't get them they have a tendency to leak. He said to purchase the complete screw-on housing used on other engine. All of my fittings will inner change and it is a direct replacement. He is going to get me the number I need.

I've never seen a spin-on adapter that leaked. We converted all of our 71's and never had a leak. As long as you screw them on tight, you should be fine. Check the price both ways. If the complete base is close to the same price as the adapter, then that is the way to go. If not, then I wouldn't hesitate in just buying the adapters.

I don't know. This DD Man has worked on them every since the motors were built. Everyone in the area knows him and his quality work. So I can't doubt his word or ability. He rebuilt both of the motors in my boat 6 years ago. The last thing I want is an oil leak.

Bill - can you post your mechanics name, contact info? It may help me this season with some projects I am considering. Thanks.

Fat old fingers. At my age I'm allowed to skip a few letters now and then. :D His name is Bert Diesel 1-419-348-6746. He does most or all of the Detroit boat diesel work in the area. Everyone with Diesels in the area know him. Great guy, great mechanic, knows his Detroit's. I can't say about other engines I did not ask. He is rebuilding a friends motor in his 53 now.

I had my port adaptor leaking badly a couple years ago. Since I wasn't certain that it was the gasket, and not a cracked unit, and since it only cost $60 or so, I just replaced it. It's been fine since.
