Perko sea strainers / replacement or rebuild

I need to replace 4 strainers. After 33 years they are in need of service. The 4 are located in my genset hole. 2 larger ones for the Genset and heads and 2 smaller ones for the raw water pumps for the a/c compressors. Cost wise it is better to replace than rebuild. Any reason to not replace with the Perko strainers. Has anyone found them to be inferior to the originals?

I m a big fan of external South Bay strainers. I have them on both mains and air con. For the gen I kept the shower head style intake and replaced the internal strainer but I never have to clean it as the shower head keeps everything out. I ve used them for years on various boats I ve run too. Great upgrade.

I canned mine and went to South Bay strainers on the hull raw water intakes. No issues, and pretty much zero maintenance. No leaks, no clogs, no extra feet of hose etc. One of the best things I've ever done to the boat.

Ditto. I love my Southbay strainers. Never had any problem with them over 10 years or so. And the extra space in the ER makes crawling around down there much easier.

I'm another convert to the external south Bay Strainers (also called Buck Algonquin strainers). I changed over about 4 years ago and not a single problem since. They are fairly inexpensive and clean up the engine room bilge. If you want a really good set (4) of the round internal Perko strainers (fresh water all their life) Ill give you a great deal on mine.

On the Perko strainers; What is wrong with them. Every lil part is available if/when needed. You can service them, replace the whole strainer, and the boat stays in the water.

These fancy external strainers are nice.
It is easy to visualize the existing strainers not in the boat any more, but the sae-cock is still there and the hose from it. This has to stay in your visual imagine also.

Thank you for your perspective on the south bay strainers. I understand the well said points of these. That being said, I feel more comfortable having the strainers inboard so that I can monitor them and service them as needed. Unless there are any negatives to the product quality of the new Perko strainers versus the old, I am inclined to replace rather than rebuild the existing Perkos.
