Hatteras Model
61' MOTOR YACHT (1980 - 1985)
Hello All

The decks on my 61' motor yacht need to be repainted the non skid texture is fine but the paint is faded and stained in spots. How can a surface like this be prepared for painting if I sand I will sand the non skid right out. I really don't want to sand the non skid out and re do it this apears to be the original factory job with a very even uniform surface. and I have never been able to get the grit distribution even in the past any ideas?

Have done what you are asking for I used Comet or Ajax and a scothbrite pad. Scrub it real good rinse real good let dry and your ready for paint. You can also use the cleaner with a very fine s.s wire brush the Idea is break the shine and have a clean surface.

Brian,
I am currently re-painting all the non-skid on my 61 ' CPMY. I am using Perfection ."Cream" matches the original Hatteras white pretty well. If you are going over original two-part (Imron) you can clean well ,solvent wipe and go for it. The interdeck non skid compound is good and stays suspended well although you need to follow directions. If someone has painted over the original with a one part it is a different story. I have done some test areas where I was not sure what type of paint is there to see if the Perfection will lift the old stuff. If it doesn't lift the old after a couple weeks you can probably paint over it, if it does you need to strip it first. Prep work and picking the right day and time are of the utmost importance.

Sometimes, the Perfection is too glossy and becomes slippery, even over nonskid. You can experiment with the de-glossing additive to cut it down a bit. I really like the Perfection compared to the old Interthane two-part paint that Interlux used to market. It is easier to apply and more forgiving for ambient conditions and it is easier to mix small batches of.

Good luck with the project!

Yes, I add the Flattening agent 1:1 also. It kills some of the gloss and allows you to hide the imperfections better. You can add more or less to control the amount of gloss......forgot about that!!!...........................Pat
