  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
on my 58’ YF I’m noticing that the paint is peeling off window frames. These are aluminum correct? Were they painted when it left factory, or did some schmoe paint them at some point? What would be best thing to do moving forward?

My frames were anodized and were fading. I took them out, media blasted and painted with awlgrip. I also rebeded all the glass to fix any leaks in the front windows.

They were anodized from the factory. Prior owners must have painted them. Before repainting do a test sample to make sure the new product does not lift the current product. Just in case someone just used a one part paint.

They need to be media blaster like he said but should acid washed and alodined prior to primer and paint. Forget powder coating it’s garbage. No matter what you do they will still start with filiform corrosion eventually

It’s hard to find an anodizing company that can replicate the original Hatteras bronze color. I tried. I had a local Ft Lauderdale company redo my trunk windows. Sent them to an anodizer out of state . I had to establish a UPS account to ship them . They came back sticking through the plywood box that I shipped them in , and were bent , suddenly UPS didn’t want to know me . In addition, the frames weren’t parallel, so I had to start over. Waterway Systems in Bradenton FL had the jigs to make accurate frames. I then had them hard anodized. I painted them with Imron in a bronze metallic color that matched the original anodized bronze. Over ten years and still no corrosion.

Looks like most of the replies here involved removing frames from boat which is not really what I was wanting to do. That seems like quite the project, not sure I feel comfortable tackling, going to have to think about it. Thanks for all the replies though!

Sand, prime and paint with paint matching the super structure.

I don't know the age of your boat but eventually all of the windows need attention. The slides and fuzz will need replacing and there are those sneaky leaks. I did the salon windows one off season and the front the next. You can do it in stages so it doesn't feel like such a huge task. It was one of the most rewarding improvements I made on my boat.

One of the things I love about this forum... they are literally down the street from me. I need to replace a slider glass in my aft deck and I'll be looking them up.

Thanks!

I can vouch for Waterway Systems. Great company to work with, provided they are still owned by the same people. I think his first name was Chuck
