Hatteras Model
37' CONVERTIBLE (1977 - 1982)
I just bought a 1980 37c with 671-n's and over all I am very happy with it so far. There are however a few small spots on the top side where the paint has been chipped or rubbed off, and I sure the paint is original. Is there any way to touch up these spots without making a bigger mess? Any info would be helpful , thanks.

No real good ones.

You can Marinetex gouges, but it will be visible. Its better than leaving them through......

We have a 1978 ,37c. Had the same problem. Tried touching up with imron, it never came out right. actually everything we tried made problem worse. Finally bit the the bullet and had the boat painted, WOW what a difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck jack.

I just went thru this exact situation a week ago. I have an '81 LRC which is in great shape but like you had a few small chips and areas where the paint had been rubbed through, mostly where dock lines had chafed the edge of the paint.

I purchased a qt of Interlux Briteside Poly in Hatteras Off-White 4208 but found it was darker than my original paint. I then purchased a pt can of Interlux White 4359 and using a small jar mixed the two until I had an exact color match. In my case it was 3/2, 3 parts 4208 and one part 4359. I then added a touch of Interlux 333 thinner and then using a small artist brush touched up all of the chips and worn spots. None of the areas concerned exceeded 2 sq inches and the end result is that they are near invisible.

Good luck with your touch-up.

Jim,

Curious why you chose the Brightside. That's the 1-part polyurethene--correct? I was leaning towards the enamal because I thought it would be easier to work with and level better. With repair areas being so small, I wonder if the benefit of an easier-to-work-with paint outweigh the U/V superiority of the 1-part poly and the toughness superiority of the 2-part poly.

Matt

The Brightside is a really great paint to work with. It holds up almost as good as the two part Interlux and much, much easier to use. The new Interlux Toplac is even better and is just as easy to use.

The enamel is no longer the best deal out there for easy, in my opinion.

K

Matt,

Ditto Capt. K's comments. The Briteside poly is just as easy to work with as any enamel and the finish is tougher and glossier than you will get with enamel.

Jim

Ditto the above two responses for me. I've been using Interlux Brightside Poly in Hatteras Of White #4208 and it exactly matches my boat's color. My boat was repainted a few years back and I don't know what they used, but it still looks excellent today and Briteside Hatt Off-White matches so well I'm amazed.

Appreciate all the comments! Been pondering this issue for sometime and now I know which way to go.
