  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
I had some buffoon repair my fly bridge canvas and when he removed the top frame he must not have had help and one of the vertical braces made a crater scratch about 12 inches long and 1/4 inch wide down the side of the fly bridge. It may be only in the paint, but could be deeper. Any ideas on how to proceed to repair this. My first thoughts were to grind up 4 of his fingers and use them for filler.

I'd hire someone recommended and experienced to do the job and watch them...that way next time you'll know how to do it...it's not complicated but getting a good match and finish takes knowledge...I don't know how to get rid of that final line of new paint thickness after the local/spot repair is completed.....but I'm sure a pro would have little problem....

Ask the canvass guy who he uses when he fs up someones boat? He damaged it so he needs to pay for the repair.

Repair will depend on what your paint is. if it is Imron then it is easier. Awlgrip will be more difficult.

if imron then brush paint full thickness Imron into the scratch. allow to dry then wet sand the scratch area with 400. use a very narrow sanding block, a 4" long piece of a paint stiring stick works well. only sand the build up off then use finger to sand bottom of the scratch and then apply more paint. Keep repeating the steps until it has been filled , wet sand 600 800 1000 polish then wax.

sorry it is a lengthy process but the only way I know to do it.

If it doesn't polish out here's what I would do. Tape out a slightly larger area than the scratch. Sand inside the tape with 220 get a color match made up in Imron or Awlcraft thin just a little with fast reducer also use a little accelerator. Brush on a coat when the solvent evaporates brush on more maybe 3 coats. After it hardens wet sand then compound being carefull not to sand the surounding area to much.

This method works great with Imron or Awlcraft it will work with Awlgrip but you will have to wax it to get the shine and it won't hold up as well.

Thanks guys. I think I will try to find the painter that painted my boat and have him fix it. I don't paint.
