  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
I am reading about Ozone Generators on another site and it talks about how effective they are in removing all types of odors. Essentially the forums say the work well when used according to directions, however, there has been talk about the ozone attacking rubber seals, o-rings, the little belts in your vcr or dvd players, etc... Anyone know whether this is nonsense or not?

Not nonsense.

Ozone is an agressive oxidizer that destroys organics. (Plastic, rubber, ect) Do a search for ozone here and you'll find a concensus that it should be used sparingly or avoided.

It does reduce odors though.

The previous owner had one in the aft stateroom under the sb cabinets. Guess what the survey showed? All the hoses in that area were cracking and needed to be replaced. The previous owner payed to have the hoses replaced and I ripped out the ozone generator.

DO NOT USE AN OZONE GENERATOR ON A BOAT!

It will DESTROY rubber and plastics. That includes the INSULATION on your electrical wiring!

Yeah, Yeah, but it will smell nice, right?? :p

Ozone does help get rid of odors, but they will usually return, so find the source of the odor and fix it. Ozone is a handy "band-aid" that can create so many problems that the positive benefit isn't worth the risk.

Of great concern should be the health hazards. If anyone has a compromised respiratory system (asthma, COPD etc) the use of ozone generators should NOT be used under any circumstances.

Ozone is mother natures way of cleaning up the air. During an electical storm, after all the lightning and thunder are gone the air outside smells so clean and fresh. That is the benefit of ozone. As it rises it helps build a barrier layer to block out ultra violet rays. All this is fine, it's when we try to fool mother nature that she gets mad at us. Remember the margarine commercial "it's not nice to fool mother nature"
