Hatteras Model
61' MOTOR YACHT (1980 - 1985)
OK, I need your help again! My new slip, at a boat club I have not stayed at before, is a stickler about my overall length (you rascals, I mean the darn boat!). OK, The older brochure on this website states 61'3". I need to know including the bow pulpit and the swim platform. My boat is 555 miles away and I must return this Lease Agreement. Anyone know for sure the length of a 61' MY?
You can bet I'll measure Strategic Plan next time I'm down to KY, but not for a few weeks. I need help now!

I don't know but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasnt similar to the way the 53 is measured: On the 53 the ater line length is 47'8" Hull length is 53, Overall length with Pulpit and Swim platform is 58 and and inch or two. Assuming Hatts measurements follow the same procedure, the 61 is w/o the pulpit and platform. I'd assume BOTH are larger than what's on a 53 so somewhere around 68 seems likely. (assuming all these assumptions are correct!).

I hate to say this, but you probably have to measure the actual boat. How do you know if your boat was ordered with an optional type of swimstep, if a previous owner hasn't replaced the swimstep with a different one, have there been bow railing mods, does the anchor stick out and how far, etc.
My 60' convertible actually measures 66 1/2 feet overall. I bet everyone else's is a little different.

Your milage may vary.

Perhaps you can persuade someone near the boat to stretch a yo yo (tape) for you?

I'd go with 66 or 67. My logic is 61 feet plus 3 for the platform and 3 for the pulpit. Remeber the deadrise of the transom allows the platform to sit "back in" a bit from the deck/hull joint length.

Bear,

The length of your boat NOT counting the swim platform or the bow pulpit is 61'3". The bow pulpit can be measured easily from underneath as you can see where the actual hull is and a quick measure to the end of the pulpit will give you the info you need. For the swim platform you should drop a plumb bob from the stern to get a reference point on the platform and measure out from there. For the sake of expediency just add approx 5 ft to the hull length and you should be pretty close.

Your beam as you probably know is 18'2". Draft from the factory was 4'11".

Hatteras usually understates the length of their boats. Examples.. 88-92 60' MY was 60'9", The 54 MY's were 54'9", The 81-84 48' MY was 48'8". The 48' LRC (76-81) was 48'10", and had a 16'6" beam. So why didn't Hatteras call them by the next higher footage like most other manufacturers? It probably could have given them additional edge in marketing.

Hi Strat Plan,

Why don't you just confirm that her length is the one officially stated by Hatteras? The error if any would go in your favor, and I doubt it wouldn't fit into such a big slip. Furthermore, if you read the fine print in your rental agreement (at least mine said it in big print) the marina reserves the right to measure your boat and bill you for its actual measured length. It sounds like they are farming out their own problem - which no doubt occurs with every boat they ever store - to their client. Let them earn their money and take a laser sight or a good old tape measure to your Strategic Length. :D

Rich
PS. I took a glance at your Hatt in Sam's brochure archives, and that is one nice boat!

My 58' MY 1987 with pulpit and swim platform is 65'

Thanks for the inputs. I can go to 69'. I figured 3' for the swim platform and about 4' for the bow pulpit, which gets me to 68'. I know if I'm over, these guys will throw me out. Sure don't want to start out as the 'rule-breaking bad neighbor'. Hope my guess is right.

My marina uses the length that is on the boats tittle. This does not include the swim platform or pulpit. The Tupperware boats that have the molded platforms and molded pulpits get socked for it. My boat title states 43ft. 1 inch
I pay for 43ft.

Bear,

Where will you be keeping Strategic Plan?

Exactly!

Find a new boat club.

Ted

Thats what I did, I found a new boat club - I'm just trying to live within their rules and decide what I think of the place after this season. I will keep her this year at Duncan Bay Boat Club in Cheboygan. It seems like a pretty nice place. I'll be moving SP up from KY to northern MI starting about mid-June, hope to up there by the end of the June.
Then a few cosmetic projects and hope to be ready for the Hatteras Owners get-together over at Bay Harbor the end of July. It looks like the Army wants me to have one more surgery before I retire - so maybe I can get that done in early July (?). Then I'll finish writing my book and try to get it published by summer's end. Wish me luck!

Hi Bear,

Being a good neighbor right off the bat is not only good strategy, it is good policy.

However, does your lease agreement specifically state to include extraneous appendice such as bow pulpits and swim platforms? If not, I suspect that you are not supposed to. If so, then definitely include them. Failure to do so when it is not clearly specified in the contract can be considered to be at worst a mistake made in good faith, but can also be argued to be contractually accurate and ultimately enforceable.

Seems like you're preparing your berthing as tightly as you would a full-fledged battle plan. You can do like me: get a mooring before you even have a dingy - now THAT is what I call strategy. ;)

Rich - great effort. Maybe thats a strategy without visible means of resourcing? Ha ha Yes, I am trying to move in and be a good neighbor - I already have to learn about this darn retirement behavior, some of my soldier behaviors might have to go? Last thing I need is to become a 'rule breaker' and aggravate someone. Life is tough enough here at 'Camp Pam' under the general/warden's rules. A guy has to maintain a getaway location where he might be welcome.
