Can anybody tell me what level of operator license is needed to operate a single side band radio on a vessel? I am new to this and don't have a clue. I will need it for when I am out of the operating range of my vhf offshore. What licenses do any of you have?

You need a Station License for the boat and a Restricted Radiotelephone Operators Licence for yourself. Check www.fcc.gov.

Thanks! I was looking at the various licenses and since there were so many classes wasn't sure which I needed. I'm also reading up on the installation to try to make sure I do a good job installing the radio. I bought the radio used for a reasonable price...didn't think I needed anything fancy or superhigh-powered. I only want it for reaching land when I'm out of the reach of my VHF.

I'm going to probably install a 22ft whip antenna with an auto tuner unless anyone here has any better suggestions.

Thanks for the response!

My rig came equipped w/ a SSB but besides not really knowing how to operate it, I don't know anyone else who has one or uses it. What kind of benefits does this radio offer? Also, is there any application for Bahamas cruising (weather, security)? I wonder if a satellite phone is the ticket? Sorry for sounding like a newbie on this issue but it is a big heavy radio on the bridge that does not get any action thus far. Thank you.

I'm new to it as well. I got mine used figuring I only needed it when I was offshore out of the range of my standard VHF radio. This SSB radio will apparently, under optimal conditions, allow me to contact people several hundred miles away. Not that I need that much power but my VHF only goes about 22nm and I rarely will fish within that limit.

The radio allows acces to certain weather fax frequencies, emergencies and of course the coasties if needed where in many cases my VHF radio is limited. I can also talk from canyon to canyon with my fishing acquaintences in the event that they are doing better than myself and hence allow me to get in on the action.

I chose not to get a satillite phone because of the cost both initial, monthly and per use. I ccan apparently do a lot with this unit...most of which I don't understand yet. Hopefully with all the reading I'm doing this will clear things up.
