Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
Got started on my windlass project- removed the old Ideal pulpit/windlass combo after finding a new Ideal windlass off ebay. From the start i knew there was rot underneath the pulpit, but the extent to which it spread was a big ???. So after drilling some samples I got lucky finding only wet coring in front of the vberth hatch. Far forward was all mush, then towards the hatch was solid but brown. At the edges was wet, solid, and still blonde balsa. Got it all out and was able to dig a bit out around the edges.
Will the edges (6"+-) dry out after sitting in inside cold storage for a month? My concern is that it might not be dry enough in the storage building to suck the moisture out. If it doesn't dry out completely I can cut more. Any other suggestions ways to help dry it out?

Pull out all the wet you can and then have a heater or a fan blow over it for as long as practical. All that work would be for nothing if you trap moisture and rot back inside.

Scott is right 6 " way to much. My guess maybe a inch.
Just cut it all out. For small area if you can't cut it Acetone with help suck the moisture out but you can make a mess doing that since you have to keep flooding the area.

Yep, sounds like I should keep cutting till I'm in the dry stuff. I know Im close from the drill holes. Anyway the one thing I have come to realize is that my initial idea to cut a small hole and suck the moisture out then use CPES was naive. I guess there really is no way to effectively dry out that coring. Thanks for the guidance.
