Note to self:

Don't have boat hauled by Scott Boatyard.

WOW.
I would agree on the support issue. I am no engineer, but i ran a travel lift in the Boston area for a little while while in college. It was a 50 ton and the support for the travel lift bay was robust. For the little blow boats there it is probably fine. Not meant for the Carolina SF.
Big oops.

Wonder what the Insurance company is going to say about this!!!
Lift area was not capable for the Boat which they found out the Hard way!!!!

I think the lift looks a bit small too. maybe everything was overloaded. Look at how far forward the lift is. Did it tip it back?

That scene is in the back of mind every time the boat is lifted. Guess the lift operator was on the starboard side? Any injuries?

It looks like the WOODEN finger pier on which the lift traveled gave out. I've never seen a travel lift operated on anything other than concrete. And, the operator probably under-estimated the weight. I wouldn't be surprised if they had previously lifted a boat of the same length, albeit a SeaRay or Silverton which would weight a lot less and figured they could lift this one the same way, too.

You took the words right out of my mouth! Me too! UGH!

It also looks like only 3 straps. I have never had the boat lifted with less than 4.

There was considerable talk about this on another site. Yes, the pier collapsed, nobody was hurt, and the damage to the boat was minor. A few scratches and one bent outrigger. All in all, very lucky.

Would of thought the owner would of seen a bit of a problem with such a small lift...

Huckins Boat Yard next to me had one of it's 75 or 100 ton lifts collapes a few years ago while lifting out a boat (70' or so). The wooden pier also broke causing the boat to get 'resplashed"... Luckily the boat was only about 3' out of the water so didn't get any major damage...

It looks like everything was too small. The boat most likely slid in the straps but it still looks like the lift was too small to start with. If they broke a rear strap the boat would had shifted putting all the weight on the back strap and rear wheels overloading everything. Anyway you look at it. It's going to leave a mark.
I lift my 43 with 2 or 3 straps depending on the lift and strap rating.

Scotts is the yard that I use on Hatteras Island. It is very well run and the owner and staff are very decent, do quality work, and have all been in the boat business for many years.

From my knowledge of the yard, the lift is very well maintained and hauls boats of the size of the one in the photo on a regular basis. I believe the lift has a gauge on it so he knows what he is picking up as it comes out of the water. The lift runs out on finger pier with a good number of pilings below each run and appeared to be very heavy built and never quivered or gave any indication of eminant failure anytime I saw boats lifted on it. That said, something gave on the starboard side and the result you see in the photo. Lift operator didn't get hurt and as already said the damage to the boat was limited - yes, lucky indeed.

They called in two mobile cranes to get it all straighted out. The slipway is already being rebuilt (probably finished now as I was there last week) and the travelift is operable also with minimal damage.

My 36 is one of the smaller boats that run out of Hatteras as most are the large carolina SF hulls. Though they look heavy, many are not as heavy as a big Hatt of similar length as the interiors are fairly spartan being purpose built for day charters. Ang, we see very few searays and the like on the island as sea conditions here make it not their cup of tea...
