  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
61' MOTOR YACHT (1980 - 1985)
How many of us out there have one generator? Is there a length breakdown where two over one is needed? I am replacing at least one of my generators and I have decided to go with Phasor. Now do I replace both old Koehlers or get rid of both old and install just one new 21kw? What say you?
My Hatt is 74". I have a inverter bank that will carry refrigeration etc while servicing one generator.
Is it just peace of mind for two ? I know if I end up chartering the yacht then I would definitely need two but I have not decided if that is the route we are taking.

Good morning,
SUPPORT WOULD LIKE TO IDENTIFY THE NUMBER WITH HATTERAS YACHT

53 - MY535

THANKS

Many of the 61' motor yachts have two gennys, when you get to 65' and larger almost all of them have two. Having a single generator on a 74' would be a deficiency in the eyes of a potential buyer. Phasor makes a good product but does not have the name recognition of Northern Lights.

I have two gensets on my56 MY. One is a new (two or three year old) 20KW Kohler that I added after the OEM 20KW Kohler died and the other is a 12.5 Onan. When looking recently for a larger Hatteras, I would assume in my mind about a 20K deduction for any MY larger than mine that only had one genset. I do not need the extra capacity but I sure do like the redundancy which has come in handy.

We have considered putting a small 2nd generator in our 53 for sufficient back-up to run refrigeration etc. Has anyone done this, and if so, with what size and where was it installed? Are inverters a more practical solution? Thank you.

I've seen two generators on many over 50' yachts. Generators need to be run under a good load so they have a low rated generator for lighter loads and a higher rated one for heavy loads like cooking and HVAC.

Phasors have a good rep, although not the name recognition as he said. I think you should have one large set that will run everything, and a smaller set for cruising and nights where you won't have as much load. You might look in Boats & Harbours, there are frequently good deals on takeouts. I have a NL and like it just fine, that would be my first choice.

I think one genset is fine for most of us, especially if you have an inverter. Two is just more weight, more maintenance, and more $.

Try it with one, but leave the wiring there if you ever feel the need to add the second one back in.

Having had Onan, Westerbeke, and Kohler generaors I would have nothing but a Phasor. Their 15kw ran what the others couldn't.

Yes a boat that size usually has 2 generators to manage large loads. if you are thinking of a new one, don't forget Norpro. I have had one for 3 years now and have put almost 1900 trouble free hrs. Ours is a 21kw. good factory support at a much lower price than "name brand" units.
