I've been chasing a starting problem with my 8KW diesel generator. I tracked it to a blown fuse going to the starter selonoid(sp?) I replaced the fuse and it worked once. The next time the fuse wouldn't fit the holder, first hint. I replaced the fuse holder and it worked once. After checking everything the fuse holder had been melted but the fuse had not blown. I think the previous mechanic??? had put too large a fuse in, 30 amp.

Am I right in thinking bad selonoid or dragging starter to pull that much power? I tried just joining the wire and the genny started so you can bypass in a pinch.

It sounds more like the starter is pulling a heavy load, if it burned the fuse holder. I would check the eng. for any water in the cylinder or busted rings. I hope you do not have this problem. Another thing is could be a loose connection on your fuse holder. Armanture/stator could be hang up and draging. Generator are not run enough to eliminate fused rear bearings etc. Hope ist is something easy. Jimmy.

About the only things that can cause that is loose or dirty connections or a shorted starter coil. It does not sound like low voltage. I would bet on the shorted coil. Put an amp meter on it. The starter itself does not use that fuse. Bill
