Hatteras Model
43' MOTOR YACHT (1984 - 1987)
While cruising yesterday with genny on for air, I went downstairs and found the air off with the generator running. A little fooling around shows the genny motor running fine, seawater running fine, but no power to the panel. Is there a breaker somewhere that I can’t see that might have tripped?

There should be a breaker on the generator itself. That’s where I’d start.

Onan has a Hall effect switch in the generator coil assembly that is know to fail. This is in the exciter lead and tuns on the coils after it spins up. If you start to get frustrated because everything else checks out okay- I’d go to that step.

Thanks guys. I’ll get the sound shield off tomorrow and check both of those.

My gen breaker is on the port hull side behind the gen.

I had the same experience 6 weeks ago and all breakers were on and functioning. The next day everything worked fine, so I don't have any insight but I would like to know if you find the problem. I was going to post about my issue , but you beat me to it. "chuckbullet" may have the solution.

I’ll let you know what I find. My short cruise was a test for recovery from a recent bout of phlebitis. I failed, so it’s rest, ice and Ketel One today, generator tomorrow.

Ketel one is a vasoconstrictor. You may need to add an NSAID.

Full disclosure.

I'm not a doctor but I drove past a holiday inn express once.

I probably drove past the same one - 2 Aleve per day, one with a Bloody Mary, one with KO and tonic.

My wife, an actual cardiac ICU nurse for decades, recommends alternating ibuprofen with acetaminophen every four hours. I had a recent surgery and I used her method instead of opiates for postoperative pain control and it worked a treat.

Control box breaker was tripped. Reset it. Turned on one AC, fine; turned on second AC, fine; turned on water heater, fine; turned on toaster, fine; turned on coffee maker, fine for 3min, then control box breaker tripped; ammeter was reading about 25 amps. Noticed that the ammeter was cycling plus minus 2.5 amps, with the frequency increasing as I added load; can’t say that I’ve noticed that before.

Eventhough I had a pretty good load on when this breaker tripped, I’m thinking I should replace it. I’ve overloaded the generator a couple of times in the past, and the distribution panel breaker (3 x 30) tripped both times, not the control box breaker (2x 40). My sadly rudimentary knowledge of electrical wiring only lets me conclude that the control box breaker has weakened, and will continue to go in that direction. Is that a reasonable conclusion? Also, why a 2 x 40 on the control box, and a 3 x 30 on the distribution panel? Thanks for advice above -the control box breaker is hard to see (behind the water pressure tank), and almost impossible to get to - I had to break out my mirror-on-a-stick to see the front of it. On my way to Flukedirect.com to get a clamp-on ammeter to actually measure loads instead of guessing.
